1800's skeleton key lock in Carson City, NV

Well I moved to the outskirts of Carson City back in February and just so happens the old site of the V&T railroad use to go right through my neighborhood. the old track site is still accessible by a dirt road behind all the houses. so I went out last weekend to walk my dog and figured i would bring the Garrett, i was about 30 feet off the road and was finding the usual trash that all the white trash honkies throw out there because they are to cheap to pay the 5 dollar dump fee. and i got a real nice signal about 4 inches in the clay. pulled up this real nicely preserved 1800's heart shaped lock. my heart stopped for a minute hoping it was an old V&T lock that in good condition can bring some real big dollars to private railroad collectors. Unfortunately there were no markings on the lock but i took it to a antiquities dealer in Virginia City and he told me it could still bring a good $25-$30 on eBay. I think I will just hold onto it for now though. :tongue3:

by the way this is about 30 minutes with a wire brush and a small tooth brush

I'm not sure your lock is a railroad lock. It is possible that it might be though. Are there any markings on the lock? I've found a couple similar styled lock on Civil War battlefields and I have also seen other folks who found similar styled locks also in CW battlefield areas. Your local locksmith might be able to help you date the period of the lock and even might be able to help you find a key that fits your lock. However it might turn out that is a nice old lock with the key plate still intact. Congratulations on a nice find there.

yeah i already had someone look at it and your right it is not a railraod lock, it looks more like something used for a chest or trunk. the guy that looked at dated it between 1870-1890
