Detector(s) used
whites prizm IV
1800's farm

Well i went out to a farm that looks like was built sometime in the 1800's. i was useing my Whites Prizm IV and it just seemed like it was not working right. it seemed that all i was getting was false signals. I did dig alot of junk and only got one good signal which was a small skelaton key. The question that i have is what kind of detector should i use for hunting these old sites or is there some adjustments i can make to my detector? I will have pictures when my camera is working.

Thanks for any kind of info that anyone can give.

Happy Hunting

Re: 1800's farm

Are you using a custom or factory setting?

When you ground balanced are you certain that the balance happened?

Are you in close poxemity to HV power lines overhead?

Are the cable connections tight on your machine?

Could the area you were hunting be an old dump for mine tailings or other metal wastes? (I know of a spot where machine shop chips used to be dumped)

The Prizm should work ok for an old homestead, I'll bet something else was causing interferance, or you had an anomoly in your settings.

Hey coinshooter,

Sorry to hear your woes. Are you sure it's the detector though? Keep a few things in mind. First, the White's line of detectors (not all) but a few, can be "chatty" machines. Second, if you're getting a lot of false signals, maybe your gain is set too high. I own a white's machine too. If the gain is too high, my detector will scream at everything in the ground and go nuts. Third, maybe you're not getting false signals. Could be you're not pinpointing correctly and finding the targets. As to your machine being broken, well, a simple test would be to bench test a few coins in the air in front of your coil. Better yet, make a simple little coin garden or plot in your yard. Just bury a few different coins and run your detector over them. You'll find out real fast if it's you or you have a bum machine. Hope this helps.

P.S. - If you're new to this game, LEARN YOUR MACHINE!!!! I've had my MXT300 for over a year now and still learn new stuff every outing. Takes a L-O-T of time and patience.

Be patient. It will come to you. Do what the other two guys in this post said to do. The garden is great for practicing. It sounds like you were in a real trashy area. Ground balance your machine 3 or 4 time during your hunt. Sometimes the machines get out of balance.

Re: 1800's farm

i dont think that i can ground balance my machine. Or if yu can i dont know how. This is a turn on and go. It was a really trachy place but it seemed that i was not getting the depth for the old coins. I have found coins and other things at 6-8 inches before but this time seemed different. Maybe it is just me. I will try the garden method and the air test and see if it is my machine.

Re: 1800's farm

coinshooter,

Yes, please do try the air test, or, even better, the garden plot. If the coins are coming up on your machine, well, you know it's working. If it's not, send it back in to Whites for repair. As long as you still have the warranty, they WILL honor it and get it fixed. They are known for their customer service. Some guys have machines 20 years old and get'em fixed no problem.

Also, whenever hunting, make sure you are not near any power lines, substations, electrical ports or even other detectors. These all drive a machine batty.

Finally, make sure and read the manual that came with your machine. Hundreds of times. Seriously. That and practice will have you finding goodies soon enough.
