1800's Brass Eagle?? How Old etc??

Hello All, Found this brass eagle about 10 inches down buried under a pile of roots under a huge old tree on a circa 1865 farm. Was wondering about it possible age or what it might have been used for. It does have a hole in the head. A thought came to mind that it may be a piece for a wind chime but then again it looks a bit ornate for that. It has beveled edges that appear to be hand cut. The lines on both sides are different and appear to be from two different die stamps. Any clues? Thanks. jgas

Maybe you where right about the wind chime . Things like these where made of a higher quality back then . Or it might have been a part of a lightning rod decoration , not the rod itself but just something from it .
Maybe the two different sides where carved and not stamped ... very cool piece indeed . IMHO , Woodstock

are there woodpeckers in the area you found it ?If so items like that were often hung from a swivel in the gable tops. They would spin and flash...keeps them dang birds from tearin up the house.it has a late 1800s look to me..just a guess
