OK,I don't want to wear out my welcome but my 1800's one room schoolhouse site has turned up yet another neat relic that i wanted to share with you. This piece was a "glob" of dirt and corrosion and i didn't think too much of it til i cleaned it up and realized it was copper and has an intricate little ratchet devise built in to it...Could this be from one of those old pull down maps they would have had in a one room schoolhouse?!! I'm just fascinated with all the different relics I'm digging up at this site and I've only had about 4 hours total to detect it. Snowing here in eastern Ohio today, looking fwd to a warm Saturday when i can really take my time and find some Indian Heads!!! :D :D :D Thanks for all your input on my other schoolhouse relics!
Jerry

It could be a fly reel. But 'in the old days' reels were usually simple, single action like many fly reels of today. They were more for storage of line than anything else.

The back plate for a hand driven pencil sharpener. Engages the cutter blades and makes them go round when the crank is turned. Monty

This sounds like a good guess to me.
