My son found this round less than a 1/4 inch thick pewter artifact this afternoon, in association with early 1800's buttons, two Large Cents and other artifacts. I looked at the pattern and have not clue what if could have been used for. It is plain and flat on the other side. As you can see Pewter does deteriorate in the ground and care must be taken to preserve them once exposed to the air.

I included his finds of the day photograph to give an indication of size of the unknown object.

weird, not seen anything similar before ???

It looks to be the impression of something or could it have made an impression into a soft material like clay ???

Looks old (in US terms)

Didn't folks back then seal letters with wax before sending?
Could this be part of the stamp?

I searched a bit today, I tried to think of logical things that someone living in a small isolated wooded area in the early to mid 1800's would need for necessity, things like a candle holder or something along that line. It is not very big, for awhile I was considering it being some type of trivet but they are usually Iron. I went thru my Rev War artifact book and came up empty on anything simliar, perhaps someone will recognize it.

Don,

I'm totally stumped on this one...but I still came up with a list of guesses:

1.  Colonial-Era E-Z Bake Oven Bundt Cake Mould

2.  Pewter Coaster

3.  The first Hockey Puck ever

4.  Limited Edition replica UFO

5.  Beer weight--used to determine if the barkeep had pulled a decent pint for you

6.  OH NO, IT'S RADIUM  HIT THE DECK!

Regards,

Buckleboy

Why Will, you gave some good guesses! ::)
Fairly certain this will end up another mystery what is it in my son's collection, one of the great aspects of our hobby, not knowing what we found. ;D
