Got out yesterday to hunt the "Haunted House" with Magnum yesterday and stopped by to see the guy who got us on that property. Josh had his display of relics and we were showing them to him when he recommended we look at a place he had played at as a kid. House was located just across highway from his business in the woods and has been gone along time. You could tell from the arrangement of the trees and the large house size sunken area where the house had been located. This was the 3rd site he has informed me of and all have produce older coins. Site was covered with vines and they were in the top layer of soil in some places several layers thick. Even the dirt was different than anything I have hunted in. Very loose, dry on top, moist below the roots, almost sandy feeling, brown dirt. Like the area around a creek that has flooded and all the topsoil has washed away leaving just exposed roots. This is a new style of hunting for me. It was a tough swinging and digging in some areas. Very physical but satisfying metal detecting.
My ET was set on 2 tone ferrous w/ 8" Sunray, almost open screen, Auto +3 was running at 24. The field on the edge of woods had it going at 19 so seems the woods has much milder soil with fewer minerals than surrounding area.
The 42' Mercury was first and had several nails around it but easy to see at solid 12-45. Just a couple inches deep. The picture below shows the area and it was fairly open area. As I moved to the right in the picture the nails were found in a narrow area and if you moved too much to the right or left you would not have any signals. They are even rusted the same color as the dirt on the outside The next signal was a bouncy signal but easy to pick out of the nails. Pulled the paste tube out and checked the hole and got a 12-39. thought it was a Wheat but when I moved the dirt around I saw what I thought was a IH penny. Wow what a surprise to see the 1870 3 cent nickel. My oldest nickel to date. Scanning the hole again produces a12-39. Thinking it was just trash I went back in and I see tiny silver. My new oldest coin is now a 1841 Half dime. It has a hole so guess it was worn at one time. Just 6" to the right I get a 12-45 that would pop up among the iron enough to warrant digging. 1943 20 Mexicanos Centavos and as the rest of the coins in great shape. Covered another 10 feet and the nail signals thinned out then in a couple more feet the signals disappeared. The ET has consistently produce for me in older iron laden spots with TTF. Flipping to a coin pattern it didn't see the coins through the iron so learning TTF has put more finds in my pouch.
I like using 2 tones so much I have a G2 coming Monday and will be getting a NEL Sharp 5" to get even better separation at this site next weekend. Days like this really keep my obsession going strong. Thanks for looking. John R.
