Hello, at one of my favorite thrift stores today. Got tons of sterling here in the past and today probably got me my best silver score ever. I found the cigar box easily enough, but the creamer and sugar were hiding under a giant pile of novelty pot holders. Luckily, nothing was dented or scratched up. Very intricate design and the hallmarks indicate .875 purity (in arabic). I can't find any guides on the maker/city marks, but at least I know the import stuff. 15.8 total pure silver weight, but these types of things are worth more than melt. The cigar box alone is 11.5 ounces. Also got a nice nickel carafe for $3 with all pieces (except cord) and no dents (unusual) and the day before some early 20th barley twist candlesticks and salesman sample meat grinder.

Love the foreign silver! Great pick.

That's totally awesome :icon_thumright: I found a silver tray made of solid alloy silver from the middle east that slipped through the ts system who only knows what "sterling" designates and ended up priced as brick-brac for 3 bucks. These off marked silver pieces are out there and a keen eye is all that's needed to seek it out.

That's a really helpful picture!

Goldencoin,

Thanks for taking the time and the pics and teaching what the stamped symbols mean. AS our WORLD grows seemingly smaller and smaller, could you post more examples of foreign markings or a hotlink or two of where they show what might be equal to our Sterling/gold marks?

Thanks again for helping others,
Bill

Well, I didn't know they were silver based on their marks, but they had the feel of silver. It took maybe a half hour of googling "Persian hallmarks" or "Middle east silver" until I got some results. It's impossible to know all possible marks from each country, but it's more about recognizing quality. I paid $5 for everything and they'd probably sell as a set for $400-$500. The hallmarks put it about pre-1920 Ottoman empire/Iran
