Found this a while ago on a short one hour hunt near St Johns, Newfoundland. Was once on a chain maybe, or bracelet but does have the hole in it and the date is worn very thin. You can almost make out the second two numbers, maybe or maybe not. They minted this particular coin from 1858 to 1901. A few Canadian clad pennies and this was about it. Guessing this could have been lost most anytime, but it was a good 6 inches down in this very tough grass. Don't know what type of grass it is, but it's super tough to make a nice plug.

still silver and still a great find. a lot of people would love to find it. congrats on the recovery

1887 would be my guess. 3rd number is almost definitely an 8 and the 4th looks most like a 7 but might be a 2.

guessing you're close on that date, really hard to make out. Thanks !!

In the 20th Century trappers/fisherman and outdoorsman were known to carry their money (coins) on strings as a result of a lack of pockets in their outer clothing.
Therefore by making holes in the soft silver metal of the 20th Century coinage they would be able to tie a string around their waist that would allow the coins to slide into the string and be carried this way.
This is why the vast majority of the coins you see on E-bay with hole punches are between the years 1858-1910.
If only those coins could speak!

Interesting silver find! :occasion14:

the hole may be explainable but the crimping kinda as if held by a tool of some sort is present. One of my thoughts is that this would not have been worn as any kind of adornment since the crimping ruined the looks of the coin. Just a thought, but that is what makes this hobby so interesting to me is the stories that could be told by the things we find.

Thanks !!
