Hit a huge field today, only the second time at this site. There are the visible ruins of a very old house, which I hit the first time I was here last fall, but came up empty.

Today I hit the area around another house that shows up on the 1930s era aerial photo, but there is no trace of it now. Just 10 minutes into the hunt hit an 11-46 on the E-Trac, which is usually a clad quarter, and was quite surprised and elated when this popped out. My first ever 4 reale, and only keeper of the hunt.

A bit weird to have a hole in one side but not the other. Looking at the hole, it looks like a small image of the king in it. I don’t know enough about these things to know if that was intentional at the mint, or post circulation, or I’m just seeing things. If anyone knows about that, please let me know.

I now have the half reale, 1 reale, 2 reale, and 4 reale. Just need the big one. Good luck with that.

HH and thanks for looking.

My best non banner find imo was a 1656 4 Reales cob I found early last year. Oddly enough it was counterstamped too.

...AND, I've seen counter-stamped coinage in other countries too,
so it seems to be a certification of Fineness and/or Weight, I believe....
....Anyway, Way Cool Find...! :icon_thumright:

I have seen several 8 reales make Banner. Four reales are much harder to find than eights, you just hardly ever see them posted. That plus the counterstamp make it Banner IMO. Vote submitted

That's a crazy good find for sure! You just don't see too many 4 reales posted on this site ( or anywhere). Good luck on completing your collection!

Awesome find and in great shape ... congrats!

That is a beautiful coin... and with a great counterstamp! So cool! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us!

Countermark 4 reales is a really interesting find! Congratulations:icon_thumleft:

Amazing and very uncommon coin ! Banner vote !

They called it "the head of an ass on the neck of a fool" I do believe. It was one of the Bank of England's attempt to alleviate a lack of currency. Actually would be classified as a "token" I do believe...was easy to counterfeit so they switched to this sort eventually....

Congrats on a nice find!

Great find! The counterstamp is awesome. I would love to find a 2R or a 4R. Congrats!

Well Done congratulations seems like the verdict here is these are rare. Voting Banner....

This British Counter-Mark of King Geo III's bust was during a time of emergency issues.
They were marked to circulate as either Dollars or Half Dollars.
There was a saying at the time:
'The head of a mad man on the neck of a fool'
