1793 Large Cent

They are predicting snow, but didn't stop me from getting out today!

I visited the park that yielded that 1797 reale two weeks ago. Tried a different area for about an hour. I found a number of modern coins, then came across a signal that I figured would be a quarter.

Nope.

Out comes a very heavy, very thick coin. Green as can be, so I know it was an oldie.

A light rinse with water, and I could make out the face. A little later, I got the date. 1793 wreath cent. Whoa!

After a little research, I read that some have writing on the edge. I took a picture of the edge showing where I could make out "hundred." Very cool.

A little more research indicates that there are two varieties of this coin. I don't think that mine has the strawberry bush, but I can dare to dream!

Yup! I don't have a caliper, but its between 2-3 mm thick. Crazy

They are monster thick coins! You should not clean? Too far gone and you will most likely toast it! Congratulations!

We'll definitely get together for a hunt, Scrappy! There are two places that we've talked about going to, but our schedules haven't aligned. I haven't been to either of them yet in the expectation that we'd go together. Gotta get through the next two weeks, then we should set something up!

Hard to tell given the condition, but if it is a 1793 it's an incredibly rare coin. The lettered edge puts it 1793-1795 although the 94/95s are far more common in comparison.

It's definitely 1793. I'll post a zoomed in pic of the date tomorrow. The 3 is clear as day if you zoom in.

Definitely a 3 with the close up and quite a rare drop indeed. Dug a 1794 but the 93 still eludes me. Congrats again

Wow that's one great find. Heck even just a Good condition goes for big money. You just don't see them very often.
