Got invited to a new spot by the owner of an 1820 home with about an acre of property around it. Found a large copper that I could not identify until I got home and cleaned it. It's a 1788 Massachusetts copper cent. Also found a wax seal which shows an old railroad engine (very early) and the letter NIS under it. (Anyone with any information on this would be greatly appreciated).

Also found two identical buttons with backmark of Ives Scott & Co. which dates them to 1834-1836. Two other buttons, one which almost gave me a heart attack. It had so much of the gilt still on it, when I first saw it, I thought it was a five dollar gold coin. (oh well).

There was also a nice hose nozzle a small lock and a rabies tag. All in all a fantastic afternoon between thunderstorms. The nice thing is I only covered about 1/4 or less of the property...Thanks for looking...Lance

Awesome finds Lance! That train seal matrix is fantastic, what could the initails "NIS" mean? The style looks mid 1800s. Thanks for sharing the finds and HH, Mike

Thanks Mike. The steam engine does appear to be mid 1800's but I have no idea on the initials NIS. Hope someone out there might have an idea. Only thing I could come up with was National Institute of Science.

Very nice stuff you got there. love the copper. the train seal is very interesting too. the 0-6-0 style of engine of that type is from 1840s era. front and trailing trucks were introduced later as the weight of the engines grew. MY guess for the initials would be one of 2 possibilities. At that time many engines were named. seal could be from a particular engine. the other possibility is it may have been from an engine manufacturer. Just a guess . you should try to research it further. the seal may be worth quite a bit. I Saw a show on history channel (I think) about divers finding 2 steam engines off the coast of NJ. They were from a manufacturer in Boston and ended up being the only 2 existing engines of that type in the world. very interesting show.
