1788 counterfeit NJ copper

I have found a few nj coppers but this is my first nj counterfeit so I'm pretty excited about that. Rang at a nice mid tone and in the mid 60's on the at pro. wasnt expecting a coin at all but when it came up and I seem the shield I knew it had to be a fake. Also found a few buttons as some iron but the iron goes right into some apple cider vinegar when I get home.

Not an expert by any means but I have found quite a few Jersey coppers .
imho it is a 1787 or 1788 Jersey copper with a clogged or broken die stuck on a Talbot Lee coin , there were many varieties from various mints and the dies were crudely made esp. the reverse shield .

Just a matter of iding the variety and comparing to other examples. That will tell the story.

This is my sixth NJ copper. I was actually just thinking I haven't found one in a while and then this popped up. I just found a counterfeit KG and it looks to be made of the same cast alloy.
I'm pretty sure it's 1788 and it looks like the points on the shield point to the R and the S in Pluribus

GREAT COIN Greylock! (Tom) Haven't pinned down variety yet....but you will find it's 1786....Rahway Mills.....Narrow shield w/coulter and curved beam. One of the seven varieties. Will get back to it soon. Unless Don beats me to it! Don't know about the counterfeit thing yet, but it's very interesting! Todd

Do not think it is a counterfeit right now.

I think I have the variety! Don needs to confirm......M-23-R......Scarce. It was made from this die variety. As regards to cft. It's something Don in SJ will have to determine. Tom......I guess I'm missing out BIG TIME! Congrats.......Todd

Hogge, thought about 1786 but looked more like 88 so I just threw it out there hoping you guys would be able to correct me. It rang up like a brass button, mid tone. The color is off for around here too it's like a dark greenish grey. Have you been getting out?

You seen it right because it definitely looks like a cast coin, but being dug, and if there was die issues, no way you can rule out a genuine issue... not to mention the probability of finding a genuine NJ is much higher than ctft.

The only other one it could be was the 23-P. (and of course the rare one 23 1/2). But the P reverse doesn't match at all.

Most likely it is the Obv 23 and not 23 1/2, that one is so rare I see no pics, but did ask my NJ collectors for their opinion, hopefully a reply soon, but I would go with it being a 1786 M.23-R variety and doubt it is a counterfeit, it if is, that might be of more interest. It is only the second 23-R in the survey. The other one found in CT....

It's amazing. I stare at these coins for hours. My eyes are strained my head is pounding and I still can't tell what they are. These guys see it and within 5 minutes know what it is or are close to knowing. I hope some day I will be able to pass on the knowledge. Thanks again
