I'm not sure but I believe this might be the first 1783 Irish I have seen ground found, so without a doubt a counterfeit. I know it is a known date for counterfeits, just not sure how common or not, Regals were last dated 1782 for that series.

I've seen a couple posted. Date isn't rare enough on it's own to attract attention, so is generally considered fairly common.

I know it is listed as a known counterfeited year in "Forgotten Coins" book but I do not recall seeing an 83 before is all I am saying. Plenty of 81 & 82s that's for sure, but not sure I would consider 83 fairly common but perhaps it is for cigar box finds. :)

Update:
The C4 Newsletter has a recent article about the 1783 written Dr R Moore. He is looking at the photos of this one as I write this and they are being studied for family determintations and it is a very interesting article. It sure told me there are many more out there that I had thought, but also a bit of interest in the studying of all the die varieties for this year and the similarity of dies to known 1781 & 1782 dies. Known numbers seem to be over 140+ ......

Yes for detecting it wouldn't be very common, but then again there's a lot we don't find much of! :)

Thanks for looking! I'll post more pics in a new thread.
