hi there, not really too clued up on coins so looking for a little info on this, from what I can make out its a George 111 halfpenny and the date looks like 1783, also read in a couple of places about this date its likely a counterfeit coin? Any info would be greatly appreciated image.webpimage.webp

On the surface it is definitely a KGIII & the date is 1783. As far as counterfeit I'm not sure, but it doesn't look authentic to me. I'm sure that someone with more experience will chime in with a better answer.

I believe it is a period counterfeit. Most of the KG III coins circulating in North America were counterfeits. Check out this link:

It's counterfeit, but much better than the typical counterfeit halfpenny because a 1780s date is not common. It's worth looking into because it's worth in the range of anywhere from $100 - $500, or who knows. Chances are it's going to be the low end, but new varieties still get discovered and if it was say something like a mule not seen before it would easily be worth more than $500. I remember having a similar one, maybe the same coin, and the collectors also collected by die state, and I was lucky I had the least common (die state) and sold it for a fair chunk of change.

PS: I may be quite conservative with the numbers I am using. It's a good coin, it's just that it's like any other coin, little things matter and it needs to be Id'd.

I think the date is likely 1785.

That's a wowee! There are your Machin Mill George III halfpennies but those are dated 1778, 1776, 1774, 1787. Your piece might be a 1785-- don't know if that has American connections, but it is a scarce date for imitation George III coppers if I remember correctly from reading Anton and Kesse's Forgotten Coins of North America. KEEP IT!

Possibly counterfeit because the shading on the coin isnt normally that shade of color. Its lighter.
