1781 KGIII HIBERNIA.......CLEANED UP PIC'S!!

Made it out to the field's again yesterday at the house. With the find's of the usual button's and a 1917 wheaty I took a break for about an hour or so.Got back to my spot and got a solid 79 on the MXT,after the second shovel full I saw in the hole (on edge!!) a beautiful green disc staring back.Unfortunately my shovel slid down the side of the coin. This is my first Hibernia ever. Are these alway's stamped kind of offset?I'll get it cleaned up and let you see how it turned out.Thank's for looking :icon_thumright:

Nice copper...gotta love that disc in the hole!

Re: 1781 KGIII HIBERNIA

Looks like a somewhat crude contemporary counterfeit. Curious to see it after cleaning.

Re: 1781 KGIII HIBERNIA

Congrats on your first Hibernia and IP is so correct on it being a crude counterfeit, 1781 is a one of the most common dates used for the counterfeiting of the Hibernias.

One of my most beautiful old coppers I have found is a 1781 Hibernia, at least on the Obverse side. Besides being super thin, mine used the letter punch G (GEORGIUS) to make an O....
Evidently the counterfeiter either did not have the letter O punch or he misstruck the G and than "filled" the G in to make an O.

One of the reasons why the counterfeit colonials are collected, for the differences which collectors look for.

If it was mine of course I would use peroxide, however, not sure how the soil is at your place, but the coin does not look too bad under the crud. I have done so many I do not get upset if the coins ends up worst looking, figureing it was the coin's condition in the first place that allowed that to happen, if they are solid, then peroxide will remove most of the crud with some nice wet qtip work. For those afraid to try it, I would not leave it as is, but would then see either if gentle toothpicking removes crud once it is thoroughly dry or a wet qtip with either water or peroxide and try small areas at first to get an idea on what is under the crud.
