Hi guys! I haven't posted in some time but I wanted to share some recent discoveries.

Just so happens my boss bought a house, and on the property there is a foundation that was once a home built in the 1780s that doubled as the county's first court house starting in 1791, burned in the early 1900s. The modern house is set back a ways from the foundation so everything around the home site (for the most part) is old. What's strange (and fantastic) is that most of this stuff was only a few inches deep. Some of the buttons I just kicked the dirt/leaves and they popped right out.

I've made 3 trips there over the past few days and came away with some nice finds.

First, I found more buttons here than I have at any other site. They were popping out left and right - 19 in total. And most of them were huge flat buttons - not many of the 1800s "treble gilt etc etc" type I'm used to finding. I think the soil here is pretty acidic as you can probably see as basically everything I found is toasted. I can make out some flowery designs on a few of the buttons, but not much. One that has me really excited is the 1800s artillery button. I

Coin-wise, I did fairly well with the exception of almost all of them being in terrible shape. Two large coppers that are completely worn. One (pictured by itself) I'm fairly sure is a Vermont State copper...right after I took it out of the ground I could see a right-facing bust and pretty sure the "MON" of "VERMONT" in the upper left. As it dried, the details got worse. The holed copper I believe is some kind of KG, no idea on the reddish-colored one. Also pictured is the back of an 1847 Large Cent that the owner wanted to keep, and a 19?? V Nickle. Not pictured are 1888 and 1905 Indian Heads that his kids helped me find, and kept. No doubt the prize of these hunts is a holed 1783 half reale. It was a relief finding a silver on which I could actually see a date.

Relics - got a few buckles and pieces, (pretty sure the rectangular one is a shoe buckle frame, a thimble, some silver jewelry, and some unidentified thingy.

Overall it was great to get out after a long hiatus, especially at a place like this. No doubt I will be back again soon...

Very nice assortment of finds really like the half real and artillery button, congrats on some good hunts

Nice finds and a heck of a site, pound that spot :occasion14:

Great collection of finds! Looks like that site will be keeping you busy for awhile. Congratulations.

the vermont copper, if you can't see what it is take dish soap and just don't be afraid to clean it then soak in olive oil over night then dish soap again. after it dries should be the best chance of seeing something clearly and please repost pics of it. i'd love to see it

WOOOOOOOW NICE FINDS>

Dang! You're raking in some good finds at that spot. Congrats

O man...I'd be WEARING that place out!! Great finds, with most everything near the surface you know it's never been searched...im sure we'll be seeing more from there soon! Congrats...Ddf

That's a great group of finds. Hard to pick what I like best, likely the Spanish silver. Don't ya hate when a copper loses detail after drying out? Either way still great finds, I noticed some nice shoe Buckle fragments also, looks like you're on a nice old site keep pounding it!

I will see what I can do. I've already tried cleaning it a bit and it seems if I scrub too hard it just wipes away the few details that are left. I think the next step is to attack it with a toothpick.

Very nice finds... I see a broken show buckle frame and part of a bat wing buckle.

Excellent assortment of coins and relics!

great finds, bet those boys had big smiles

Awesome 1700's recoveries! Love to see posts like yours. Thanks for showing.

That artillery button is the find of the day for me. What a great color on that baby.

Nice digs, love that artillery button!

AWESOME hunt man! Those are some excellent colonial relics! Take your time on that site! It could keep producing. Good place to play with your machine settings (were ya using the XP or Whites?) and go back over the same areas and see what else ya can find! Or wait till a good raiun hits and try it again!
Happy for ya grasshopper!

I'm in NC for work and surrounded by history but hard finding places when you don't know the area, (and the strict laws in parks) best I've done is a silver dime out of a grocery store coinstar machine! LOL

Thanks! I was using the Deus. And my thoughts exactly in regards to playing around with the programs. I'm starting to love this machine, but I still have a ton to learn. Have been trying out a bunch of the different stock programs for now but definitely am looking into some custom ones that might help me out. Even the old stuff I've found is really shallow so I think it's a matter of picking out some goodies that may be mixed with iron.

Yup, that's about a perfect day in my book. Wonderful to see all the finds from that era. Looking forward to more...
