Found at old 1800’s farm yesterday, seems like thin brass front filled with lead.

Any ideas?

That’s a head scratcher, but very cool, great job

Toasted lantern wick wheel or shotgun headstamp?

Toasted lantern wick wheel or shotgun headstamp?

The toasted headstamp note had me thinking. I went out hunting yesterday and dug my typical 10-12 headstamps of various states of decay and styles. Wondering if the backer to a headstamp was lead I snapped a bunch of them. They all had backers made of compact felt. The find in the post has a backer that is definitely lead.

The lamp adjuster idea is close. Similar size and similar typical text around the perimeter. I’ve never found an adjuster with lead backing.

Were buttons ever made from thin brass filled with lead like a rosette?

Thx for you comments.

If it were a wick adjuster... it may have been re-attached at some point with solder.
Thus filling the back with solder.

It does look like a repair effort - and a poor one. Too small to be a wick adjuster?

The 79 could be part of a patent date.
