Wow!

From the sun rising over the mountains in the background, I would guess it is a NY plate.

Will you tell us where it was dug?

rather than Revolutionary War period, I would lean more towards it being 1830's New York Militia or National Guard shoulder belt plate, dressed up by it's owner no doubt

That looks to me to be a piece from the time of the Revolution or maybe even earlier... Possible Sullivan's Campaign through New York state! interesting.....keep on Digging!

Outstanding piece of history, nothing is as special as an artifact with the personal touch. But a finder's story is just as important.

I was thinking it was 1776. I would want a value and some idea about dating the plate. Please feel free to copy and send around for a better idea of dating and value. Thanks for all your comments now please help me get the answers to age and value.. I know its a keeper. It was found at an old cellar hole in southern New York state. Thanks for your help ..

Can't be 1776. It's probably 1812 era due to the eagle design. That design clutched with the olive branches and arrows did not come about until after the Revolution. Still an incredible find.

Great find. The same question about the date came up in this old thread: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/355181-revolutionary-war-era-belt-plate.html
My thoughts are that you can't date the plate itself on the design, which may have been added later.
But I wouldn't know the difference, since I don't even know if the plate design was different in the two wars. The other thread has a link to email Don Troiani, which seems like a good idea.

Can't possibly be that early. The eagle wasn't even adopted as the heraldry of the US until 1782, and the style of depiction of the eagle here wasn't used until around 1809. This is certainly going to be post-1810. Perhaps others can find additional clues.
