but there is still a Lime Kiln and 250+ acres left to
explore!!!
Finds were a little slim today, but had a great time
and got my first heel plate.

Heel Plate (Civil War 2nd Corps)
Cast Button (marked "PLATED" with 3 stars)
Traveling Pencil
Brass Leaf
Stud
Iron Buckle

The heel plates are certainly "of the era".

Can you imagine the sound of everyone wearing those on brick and cobble streets?

That would be a sound!!!
The house that this was found at is on the road between Antietam
and Gettysburg. I thought we would have found much more
Civil War items. There is a creek and blacksmith's shop in the front
of the property on the road.

Nice finds Ty, good luck on the 250.

Nice job on that heel plate Buck-o. Congrats.
Great addition to the relic case.

Great relics

TY...do you have any more info on the history of those heel plates? I never realized they were CW related, have dug a couple of the heart shape ones (24th corps??) and was jsut recently informed they were worn by the soldiers of the CW.

Ty...here are the 2 heart heel plates I've found....

My understanding is that these heel plates with cut-outs were worn by both civilians and soldiers. I would imagine that if found in a camp or battlefield, a heel plate would likely have been worn as a corps marking for someone...but I have found many heel plates with cut-outs like these in homesites too, so I think their use was more widespread, with fewer military ties.

I have not found any other CW relics at the places these plates have come up--and usually if anything there is an Eagle button to confirm a CW connection at a homestead.

These are still Fantastic finds. I like the leaf. Is it a plated pin-back item?

Buckles...I also thoguth they had civilian use as well. In my case I ahve found not civil war era relics or button in the area but earlier relics. The last heart shaped heel plate I found I also found an early 1800's artillery button in the same general area... :icon_scratch:

Nice finds but I may have to disagree on the heel plate. This type heel plates turn up in many spots that have no known civil war activity. Yes it does have the 2nd corp symbol but I think it is just coincidence. Heel plates like this were used on civilian shoes as well as military shoes. There were also some other designs used and some are also coincidentally in the shape of other corp symbols. The fact that you dug yours in civil war area would lend some credence to it being worn by a soldier though. In any case it is a nice find.

Couldn't it be the other way around that boot heel plates used during CW are being found at civilian sites were they were lost after the war?

True probably also civilian use of boot heel plates, but did they have the designs (shamrock, star & heart)? What in my opinion ID this heel plate as CW is it size and design. The small size indicates it was used for cavalry boot heel plate. The design was used by the Confederate cavalry to leave imprints in dirt/mud once off their horses. This way other Confederate soldiers would know be the imprints left whether dealing with friend or foe. Remember an article in W&ET in the 1990's (before internet) about these cavalry boot heel plates. Does anyone remember the issue number?
