All Treasure Hunting
I pulled this from a shipwreck beach just yesterday.
It Gave such a loud signal I honestly didn't pay much attention to the numbers.
As soon as I saw it I figured encrusted iron.
I even did some research on rigging.
I just passed my coil over it to jot down the read in my notes and was reminded and a bit surprised that it reads constantly in the low to mid 90's.
Here is the item and my first thought of what it could be.
Any input would be appreciated as far as cleaning.. conservation ect... Before knowing exactly what metal it is.

The encrusted item is just soaking in freshwater at the moment.

Interesting discovery , i hope you are pleasantly surprised when the encrustean is removed . cheers Mick

im surprised your friend didn't suggest this, have it x-ray'd!!! until then I would keep it in your toilet tank reservoir to keep it from rusting if its iron and to leach the saltwater out of it.
chuck.

It went into that tank last night. I only removed it briefly for the photos..
The first cardinal rule of any metallic saltwater find is to never let it dry out. I could change the water myself every couple of days but the toilet tank works well.
And yes the x-ray was brought up.
That's not always a practical solution for everyone however.
I do have a relative who is a veterinarian and I might do just that.

good to know you got the basics covered!! toilet tank is great, just drop it in and let the flushing do the work! cant wait to see the x-rays, they will give you the actual shape of whatever is under all that encrustation.

I haven't completely decided on that yet.
It might get a quick 50/50
Water muriatic acid bath then straight to electrolysis.
Its going to have to have the salt purged from it either way.
There will be alot of soaking in its future.

GB... What is that little "dangler" in the middle... I hadn't noticed that in the other photos

GB... What is that little "dangler" in the middle... Oh never mind... I was looking at the photo "wrong"... That's what happens when you're tired from working 15 straight hours in a day... You start see things that aren't there... Never mind...

Man.. That made me tired.

This is what gave me the idea of it being sword related, this is a pic from a book on the 1715 fleet.........

Picture 079.jpg

Whack (ok, TAP) it a few times with a ball-peen hammer and see what happens. <CAUTION use at your own risk! > but it could speed up the identification time a lot!

Nice photo..thanks for adding that.
I have cleaned so many conglomerates that turn out to be junk I try not to get my hopes up too early.
The area this was in along with several other good signs are making this an interesting one to say the least.
I will be doing reverse electrolysis on this piece.
I will probably use a fish tank so I can get some photos along the way.
We should be able to find out together just what this mystery piece turns out to be.
