I can clearly see it says UNITED above the wing...and below the wing is a shield. (coin is sideways in this picture so yo can see the UNITED.)

All the ones I see online similar have a banner that says In God We Trust - but this has no banner between the wing and UNITED.

It is the size of a quarter- so I am assuming it is a quarter.

Seated Liberty Quarter before 1866.

Yup- but this one is aluminum. Apparently rare- called a 'pattern coin'. I am trying to do more research on it. :)

I've never heard of those. That would be an awesome find if you can prove it.

The earliest aluminum quarter dollar coin I saw was 1863. Latest was 1885. All very rare and VERY valuable. As you mentioned, though, they all have the banner between the wing and "UNITED".

Aluminum coins would make some sense for that time frame. Aluminum was a valuable precious metal in the early - mid 19th C.
