1700's silver and Large Cent (Cleaned Pics added-8/6)!!!
Hi all,
I went to central Ohio this past weekend to a family reunion on my wife's side. In this part of the family almost everyone owns property 150+ years old! I got to hunt this 1830's farmhouse for about 6-7 hours on August 1.
For the first 5-6 hours of hunting, all I had pulled were 9 wheats and 1 dateless buffalo (which was my first buffalo). I was feeling a little discouraged, b/c I wanted older. I asked my mother-in-law, "where did people hang out?" (this was the house she grew up in). I got a snide remark "we didn't hang out, we only worked." Then, I found a merc (1940) and told her. She said "we used to picnic there." I thought they didn't hang out So I hunted that area. W/I 5 minutes I found something silver 6.5 inches deep. It was so thin, I thought it was a blank, until I saw a very faint worn image. I could read CAROLUS.III. DEI GRATIA on the obverse (very worn, you need to tip it to read it) On the back, shield, and pillar of Hercules.
Later, I was able to read a date! 1775 or 1772 (can't tell). My father in law, who collects them later id'd it as a 2 bit Mexican Reale (though in Poor condition). I've just joined the 1700's club!!! (and silver too!)
Within another 5 minutes I got a signal between a QTR and a half. 6 inches deep, I saw the green rim of a copper. I knew I either had a LC or a HC. It was a LC !!! (IT is really dirty. If I can get dirt off w/out hurting the patina, I think the coin is in excellent condition. I can read Liberty clearly on the headband when the coin is wet. The date is really dirty. I think it may be 1839 (Before and after cleaning. I had hoped for better (the coin is not too worn, but the metal damage was bad. The date is 1826. More details of date show when in oil. Unfortunately the metal pitted over date. I confirmed 1826 as opposed to 1836 by measuring the letters on the reverse with calipers (Large Lettering pre-1829) as opposed to a medium lettered 1835 I have in my collection (letters were at least 1 mm taller. To bad. Date detail is probably still there, but I don't wanna doctor the coin. Still could clean more, but I think its close to as good as it'll get ). I broke into the 1800's club and LC club!
and cleaned
and cleaned
A few minutes later, I found a dated buffalo, 1934. The day concluded with a hole that had two more mercs -- 1943-d and 1936 !
6 hours slow and discouraging, last hour hit a lot of goodies!
So the total here pictured:
(Wheats: 25, 35, 38, 40-d, 41, 42, 44, 46, 46-d, 50; buffaloes ??, 34; Mercs 36, 40, 43-d; LC (1839?) and 2 bit Reale (1775); plus 1 square nail my wife wanted to keep, and a copper button)
Thanks for looking!

Jon
