Are you sure 1783 is the most logical possability? I am thinking perhaps it is an older pistareen. I dont know if a 1783 portrait could have been circulated that much and lost in ione of those old old sites you hunt.

That's the main question I have.... is the wear, but it didn't have to be lost at the time of the site. Most of a places we detect had activity for many years. It can't be a pistareen because the date is at the 6 0'clock position. The 7 is clear... so 17, and the 3 is also clear and I probably can get a good enough picture to show this. So for a 1700s 2 reale that I believe only leaves a 7, 8, or 9 for a third digit, and between them I think it most looks like an 8, but will continue to look and see if I can hit just the right angle to make it clear. So that is just what makes sense to me, plus many reales have been found in that area and I have never heard of anything else for a different European silver. But if anyone has another suggestion I would certainly look at it.

That is one smooth silver...I can't see anything on that. The Pistareen I found at one of the KAR sites was similarly smooth but at least with enough to positively ID...

You're probably right about the 2 reale...matches up physically.

Green Check? So what is it? I think it is too small and way too light to be even a worn 2 Reale. My somewhat worn down 1744 Pillar one is 25.9mm in diameter and 5.97 grams.

Seems like all 2 Reales are around 6 grams and 26mm in diameter from what a quick check on ND site reveals.

A green check because it's solved enough for me at the moment. (That was last night when I was very burnt out) I actually tried to delete the thread but it wouldn't let me. That said, if someone can post a coin with a 17_3 date that has a similar crown and date at 6 o'clock on the other side, I will compare. There's something there for a third digit but my eyes can't focus good enough and my camera doesn't seem to help much either.

Just tried to take a picture and...

I don't know what to think now because I do believe I see part of a date in the position a date often is, but when I take a picture it looks more like a mess. I think I'll leave this one for a Winter project, or at least wait until someone I know who is into coins and has better eyes than me, can take a look and see if they agree.

I was thinking about this today and realized I am a dummy. If the date is where it is it cannot be a pistareen, so I apologize for that suggestion. I was just home from a weekend detecting trip and was exhausted. That said, it could possibly be a pillar coin. I will look at the photos a bit closer and see if anything stands out to me.

Don't feel bad, I was in the same condition and now doubt everything I said... and was going to just remove the thread. I'm going to clean the tarnish and see if that will show me any remianing detail. If not, then in with the junk silver it goes.

I was sick of looking at it, so cleaned it and would guess there was nothing to begin with. It did have one spot that looked like a date, but there would never be enough to ID even if it was. I'm not too concerned... it ain't my first blank silver!
