Did they come out mostly gray like that? Would be a very strange combination being that color and broken.

No, they came out light gray & crumbly. The dark color is from being preserved in a preserving wax to keep them from crumbling to nothing.

Same place you got yours ;D

Yes RD it is too funny :laughing7:

all of what stuff :icon_scratch:

But they were gray not white, you just used soap and water, then wax? Were they dug in a farm field? If so probably the equipment breaking them like the ones I find. But here they all oxidize white here. Cool that you found different varieties. Another digger from FL posted some 16th in beautiful condition a few years back.

IP, yes they come out around here a light gray color. To clean them i first use a dremel with a soft wire wheel which darkens them, taking off the oxidation, then i wax them. These buttons were found in town, not in a field, i have actually found pewter buttons here that were beautiful also (full rims - no breaking) but for the most part they always seem to have some issues. I have dug American 1812, Spanish, & British pewter buttons, some nice, some not so nice.
Thanks for showing interest, Chris

That's exactly what I was getting at, if you used a dremel.

I have found dozens of Rev War pewter buttons and not a single one was round! So I see your 16th buttons as being quite acceptable condition. Just the fact there's edge loss doesn't change the history.

Yes, I agree about the history!! Thanks again IP

Hi, nice buttons, Did you see the 16th regiment spoons I put up? Same J instead of a 1. They stopped using the J about 1778. John
