i dug this thing up and have no clue what it is.

On the back of the medal? coin? etc? is a shield in the center of this thing. On the shield near the bottom is what looks like a date of 1697.

In the pictures I have two Eisenhouser silver dollars to show the thickness of the item in question. It weighs 59 grams, it's a little over two ounces.

If anyone knows what this is, or discovers what this is, please explain how you discovered it's identity or the steps you took to track it down.

I appreciate any help in identifying this thing. The only two people to look at it claimed to have no idea what it was but have offered to buy it anyway. I refused of course but would like to discover what it is.

Thank you all. IMG_3513.JPGIMG_3512.JPGIMG_3511.JPGimage.jpegimage.jpeg

it's Christian V of Denmark ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_V_of_Denmark ). Possibly a coronation medallion, or possibly a commemoration medallion after his death. According to the wiki page, he was well liked by the common people of Denmark at the time. I can't find a match on the net, but more extensive searching might turn something up

I guess you don't find them in Denmark. Only here is where you might by chance pick one up :dontknow:

Excellent find. 17th century is nearly impossible in the US.

Why's this been posted again I think that we figured it out the last time, if you are still in doubt you can write too the Danish mønt og medaljesamlingen to find out if it really is what it seems to be.Medarbejdere på Nationalmuseet write a email to one of the people in the top of the page, if this medal is for real they will write back. Write to Michael Andersen. http://natmus.dk/historisk-viden/temaer/moenter-og-medaljer/medaljeudstilling/ as I wrote the last time there is no images of this medal on the internet, but I found this it matches pretty much with the words on your medal. To everyone who helped solve this - thank you.
To everyone who was sarcastic - just because I use a metal detector doesn't mean I know how to use a bulletin board correctly. However, thanks all the same and I am truly sorry I caused you to waste your time. It was never my intent.
No, I didn't find another one. When I checked my in box I saw no posts, not realizing that posts and notifications are different - I re-posted.

To each and every member - I am sorry for the confusion and I will certainly not post twice again. I made a mistake, I apologize. If there is a way to combine the two posts, I would be happy to do so if I knew how, or if I can delete one post over the other I would also do that.

Thank you.

Sam

It's all good Sam, but if that medal is not a replica it might be worth a pretty amount of money. I still think that you should write to the Danish national museum, and ask them if it would be of there interest.:occasion14:

Samuel Bellamy-- Honest mistakes/errors happen, I've made my share, and your reply #12, shows you are one of the good guys. With that, I'd say that was a Great Find, no matter what.
