Hello,
I am primarily a collector of ancient coins but recently came across this bronze/copper coin for which I would appreciate assistance (see two attachments).
about 25 mm in diameter
8.1 grams in weight
The coins seems to have original patina with earthen highlights and is counter-stamped (or punch-marked) in numerous areas on both sides.
Two dates appear - 1641 & 1652. I am told this is an old Spanish coin used in local transactions. From the little research I have been able to do it appears to be in the era of Philip IV.
Can I get some assistance as far as the mint or area of circulation (Spain or the Colonies), and what the obverse and reverse represent (and why the punch marks).
I know that this coin was struck during the so-called 'Golden Age of Piracy' (1500 to 1600), but little else can be said without too much speculation.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
John
