1600s Shipwreck - CNN Special

That is a great find ,you can see the lead ball shots mixed in the coins to cool . Dd60

The remains of the Corolla Beach wreck and some of its artifacts will be moved to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum on Hatteras Island, North Carolina.

Midgett and the other beachcombers are entitled to keep the coins and other artifacts found near the ship they discovered. :headbang:

Very cool. Get a kick out of an Archeologist saying "Thankfully, Ray and his colleagues collected various artifacts that would have otherwise not survived." A little appreciation from the "other side"? Wow!

A truly amazing find! Amazing in that few 1600's wooden ships survive the torreador worms which eat the wood, usually within 40 years if it is in salt water.

thats awesome it got saved..congrats to those hunters who did this.. super neat ..

I like when old ships get unburied , saw two in NJ , there will be artifacts washing in from that wreck for many ,many, years to come :icon_pirat: . Witnessed one beachcomber picking up a encrusted old musket and another finding a rusty ol sword , 25 years ago . All I could get was a terrible cold , but it was exiting to see the old ships bones .. Years later , George I 's and some silver and gold, are found after most storms from the one wrecks . Congrats to Midget and ..Hatteras Island , NC for saving the remains . Cool story and picture. 8)

HAHAH I met Ray when I was detecting the outer banks last year!! He was very nice and polite! And what a find!!! My father lives in Manteo which is known for the lost colony of Roanoke and I have combed the beaches and sound on that area many times. Never found anything good though.

yep ! his name is also outer banks seaweed! hes why i started going to the banks every year after seing some of his vids detecting on the beach. he never gave me any replys and i never met him there but good for him. ive been going there 3 years now but never found anything good. i know the real time to go there for hunting is in the winter and i go there in april a little to late in the season. hopefully next time i go the museum will be open. it was closed before. willy

I'm glad I didn't find that. I don't think it would fit in my display room.

I happened to be down there when this wreck was getting moved. The wreck was pretty impressive. This past winter the storms really stripped the beaches down. Lots of great finds. Here is my post from April: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,314855.msg2266212.html#msg2266212

I love hunting the beaches of the Outer Banks. Just make sure if you go down there check out what beaches you can hunt since the Heritage Coastline is off limits.
