Honestly. The tool I found is the oldest example I can find of one in existence. I can not find any other examples of a photograph of a gouge chisel this old. If anyone has anything like this or can find a link to it, I would love to see another.

I found one, but only one, in many years of detecting. Mine is forged and will take a good edge. I suspect they were used for gouging out wooden bowls and dishes which were in fairly common use and could be made at the home place when needed.

How bout a pic of the business end.....the head. I would like to see if it was well used or not.

Very cool find. CONGRATS !!
You have probably already come across this in your research, but for the benefit of others, this link is a good one to save to files for future reference concerning old tools.

I find it very frustrating when internet links to great information stop working, so I try to download whenever possible. You can download that publication for free as a pdf file from the 'Internet Archive' here:

^ Absolutely Red-Coat. Very frustrating when old links that are saved disappear. Now, with the great USB Flash Drives
that store hundreds of gigabytes, I usually copy, paste & transfer texts, photos & PDF files that are important to me to a flash drive. I will download & save the archive you posted. Lots of other links in there for future reference also. Thanks.

Yes, the 'Internet Archive' is a tremendous resource for documents (and audio or video files) for which the copyright has expired or is not enforced by the author/publisher. Most documents are available in a variety of formats including pdf files. The vast majority are unrestricted downloads without any need for registration.

Two things to note. Some pdf files are available both as image scans (ie the text is also a scanned image) or images with OCR text. Always go for the latter if there's a choice since the text is then searchable. Also, after download, you still need to save the document to disc (right click and 'save' if using a PC).

This type can be for hollowing out wooden bowls as mentioned by Almy. Some were also used in chair making, to put the “butt cheek shape” (for lack of a better term) into chair seats.
Nice find
