I wrapped up work and headed out to a new patch of wilderness along the Lake Michigan shoreline. I don't think I would be exaggerating if I said I went a straight 30 minutes without so much as a peep through the headphones. I was moving methodically through the area when I picked up a faint deep midtone....and out pops this baby. If only this ring could talk! Wow that is AWESOME!

How did you date it to the 1600's?

Excellent question. I live next to St. Ignace, MI (way up where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet) and the Jesuits infiltrated this area fairly heavy in the early 1600's. They distributed a lot of those rings (giving the Indians an education in religion). Completely related I dug one up a handful of years ago and, having limited knowledge of Jesuit trade rings, tossed it into my kids bin of "dress up" jewelry. There it sat for a couple years...occasionally being worn in a mock wedding comprised of toddlers. I think that I almost sucked it up into our vacuum once...Then I subscribed to T-Net

Okay, I have to take you at your word (which I do) about the history behind the ring. I also have to vote banner! Amazing find from the pre-USA history of the Americas!

That my friend is one awesome find. Congrats!,,

Congrats on that Jesuit trade ring.

What are the markings on the ring? It looks like two X's. ??? Gary

** I am going to paste a blurb from a different online post that provides some info as to the symbols ***
The horizontal line running through this ring has led some to speculate that it is a schematized A over an M. A over M means Auspice Maria, or Under the Protection of Mary (Isis). The “Auspice Maria” symbol uses the two pillars from the visions of St. John Bosco. Note that not all the Jesuit rings have the horizontal line, but if you buy into the A over M theory then take a look at the emblem of the Jesuit Society of Saint Sulpice.

Wow! That copper ring is really nice!

Outstanding find! :notworthy:

Certainly a Banner find! :icon_thumleft:

Nice Trade Ring. I dug a similar one a couple years back, and the information you provided is the same info that I found for mine.

You're research looks to be legit. Beautiful piece of early history for sure!!

Beautiful Jesuit ring -Auspice Maria type.Unless you're into conspiracy theories than it would be 9.11 (IX XI):laughing7: Yes I would agree on 1600's. I have found a few and they all dated to that period. Congrats on a great find!
