1600's coin--- ID help Please.

Found an area under leaves in the forest where the soil was moist and soft and found this itty bitty 1/2 inch coin.

Couldn't see a thing until I took a tooth pick to it.. Most likely copper, so I'll not go much further with the cleaning at the present.

Says;.."PHILIPP IIII" with a great profile....The back legend I see partially but the letters makes no sense to me.

I have put two pics of the back in case one is upside down.

My bookmarks are exhausted, so if anybody has some other sources for a positive ID I'd appreciate it.

Same difference:
IV - 4th
IIII - 4th

This website has a Milan (Italy) Philipp III coin which is similar to your Philipp IIII coin.

:)

Thank you for this link. You not only identified this one (though mine is the son), I also see the one below on your link also answers what my first silver coin find (August '09) actually is suppose to look like, besides dating it.

Looks like I'm in area where this type/age coin will be available, so I appreciate your link..I see the problem here is that there are umpteen types of ways to spell Philip. Which I should have been aware of, as it's my own middle name.

Re: 1600's coin--- ID help Please.

Phillip the 4th ruled large territiories in Europe, including territories in Italy and the Netherlands by virtue of these lands being protectorates of the House of Hapsburg. Spain and Fance fought a number of wars in Italy in the late 16th and eary 17th century over who controlled certain provinces. Spain also fought wars against North Africa for control of Sicily and to open trade with central Africa.

Where you found the coin is very important to the significance of why it is there, and who might have dropped or used it. Spainish colonies and Spain used principally the escudo/real/marevedis system. Other states controlled by these kings issued coins that bear their pictures but go by the local monetary system, weights and names. It is not uncommon to see Spanish sums given in pesos, pesetas, ducats, florins, or reduced to marevedis, which I beleve was an official pay scale stipulation.

I'm between Milano and the Swiss border to the north. This is my second coin of this era.

Re: 1600's coin--- ID help Please.

I just thought of something.

Your coin could say "PHILIPP III REX...",
with only the back of the 'R' of "REX" showing due to wear,
making it look like "PHILIPP IIII".

I have seen this situation with Roman coins.

:)

Now that is very interesting, nice find! Your post helped me ID my coin as I found one very similar to yours. Also found my avatar, a gold Venetian Ducat from 1595-1605 at the same field. You are in an awesome area, look forward to seeing your finds. HH, Mike

I guess it's possible, I'll look closer tomorrow in sunlight and report back..This coin's king is very young, Phillip III so far, has only showed up middle aged on my searches. Phillip IV took over when he was young, I believe..

Milan was a protectorate of the Hapsburgs. It could be a quatrino.

Spain used troops from elsewhere in Europe, including Swiss treceros to fight off French intrusion into Italy.
