Met up with my Archaeologist friend, also a curator at our museum and confirmed I got a display case in the museum. My theme will be the castle finds, should make a very nice display. I will probably end up donating all the finds to the museum as it is our local culture. I have a lot of relics from the castle and will get pictures up when the display is finished around the end of May. I detected the castle after work for 1.5 hours and did a few farm fields as well this week. The better finds. Obverse of a religious pendant.

A lead spindle whorl found at the castle.

A very small seal matrix, not sure of the proper orientation. An S with two small leaves or possibly initials.

A small knife butt with the date 15ZZ (1522), it is the size of an American dime. Got to love dated relics!

Found another crossbow bolt tip at the castle, this one is very nice, dates 1400-1600 or possibly earlier. I’m going to conserve it the way it is in wax.

Another view of the bolt tip. Note just behind the tip or middle left is a small square, this is possibly the makers mark but I can’t seem to make out more than the square itself. HH, Mike

Hi Mike, Nice finds and pics

My local metal detecting buddy suggested that the seal matrix looks like Runes or Medieval house numbers and he is right, it is indeed an S in runes, the smaller symbols also look to be Runes but my quick research says each culture had their own dialect. Could not match them up, any help? HH, Mike

Very nice, dated pieces are special :headbang:

Thanks Mackaydon, that is correct, the pendant was IDed as Petreus and Paulus, dated around the 1700s and is from Rome Italy. My local detecting friend also donated his castle finds to my museum exhibition, I wire wheeled them today preparing them for conservation in wax. The relics are a large solid cannon ball, one Caltrop, four cross bow bolt tips and a wick lock gun mechanism, probably a pistol. HH, Mike

The marks on the knife butt and the seal matrix match very well . A castle mark ? Can the marks be traced to a castle family name ? I can't wait to see the museum display ! Great Great finds thanks for showing us ! MaineRelic

Very interesting! Do you have any pics of what's remaining of the castle or is there nothing standing? Thanks.
