Been doing some research on these wrecks, and am looking for a loophole I guess. The areas where the 2 of ships ran aground are now National Seashores (protected). The third was dredged up when they cut the channel through for Port Mansfield, but I can't find anything that says the channel itself is protected.
Everything I have read says they scattered silver coins all along the sides of the channel, and destroyed the archeaological remains of the ship when dredging the channel. I'm sure they recovered a good portion of it, but I bet they didn't get it all.
I know you can hunt the beaches just south of the Mansfield cut, but what about hunting underwater IN the cut. I realize diving in a shipping channel might be stupid, but I wonder if it's LEGAL? Also, the only way I see to get out there is via boat from Port Mansfield or a 20 mile journey over sand in an off-road vehicle. I'd obviously prefer the boat method, but not sure if I can just anchor outside the channel and swim ashore, or better yet, dive the area. I think anything found must be turned over to the state...or not touched at all.
Does anyone know for sure about the laws involved? If anyone has actually hunted the beach, how the heck did you get out there south of the channel? I have freinds in South Padre who are begging me to come spend some time with them, and If I go I want to get some serious TH'ing done...without dying, loosing my detector, or going to jail!
