I have had a 1280-X for ~16 yrs. We relocated to the DFW Texas area (10yrs ago) from Florida where I hunted only beaches, I got out of MD'ing. Well, I joined a local club and am getting back into it. We will be doing some lakes but for the most part they do parks, etc.. Now, what settings have you guys/gals used on land? I like the 1280 and can't afford to buy a land detector.
Any advice/pointers/settings would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Jim

Hey Jim,
I have the 1280X too. Turn your sensitivity up as far as you can without it chattering or falsing, for me on land that's between 8-9 here in NY. You can run some machines "hot" and chattery but not the 1280X you will miss targets and lose depth. I run my discrimination at 0 in clean areas and 3-4 in trashy areas. You can also do a disc check for finding jewelry by running with the disc at 3, when you get a hit keep passing the coil over the target and turn the disc up, if you still hear the target with the disc at 6 and above it's probably a coin and you can decide to dig it or pass if your looking for jewelry . I dig everything between 3 and 6 on the disc.
Hope that helps, Good Luck!

Glenn,

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a try tomorrow and let you know how things go....

Jim, I'm in Pennsylvania, and I hunt exclusively on land with the 1280-X.
Like you, I purchased it when I was living in a beach invironment, and then moved inland. I've just never seemed to get the funds together to purchase a new land machine. (Hopefully a good CZ before THIS summer kicks in). Anyways, I've managed to have some GREAT result using the 1280 on land.
The advice TreasurdiggrNY gave you is right on the money. I run the sensitivity as high as I can go without chatter. (Alot of times I can put it all the way up). I keep my volume all the way up, so I can hear EVERYTHING. And I usualy run my Discrimination around 2-3 for normal land hunting. Then play with the knob a little to help determine what a target might be.
To me, the faint whisper signals are the ones to really pay attention to. Especially if you can max out the Disc., and still get a signal. The sound of deep silver. Even if it doesn't make it to full discrimination, it's worth digging. I've found mercury dimes that disced-out at 5, like a nickel, probably because they were on edge or something. If I'm getting a very deep signal, but it discs out at 3-4, I'll dig it. I was told that your eyes are the best discrimination you have!
I pull silver dimes at 7-8 inches or more pretty regularly, with the 8 inch coil.
If you have any doubts as to what a 1280 can do on land, (once you really get used the machine), take a look at my totals from last year, or any other posts I've ever made here.

Every find was made with a 1280-X on Land.
Good Luck, and Happy Hunting in Texas.

TBK,
Great tips, I'll have to remember them. I checked out your '07 totals too. Very nice finds for the year WTG!

I purchased my first 1280X back in the late eighties. I was impressed; the detector was built like a tank and came in its own hardcase. Several years later I purchased another, same quality. The only issue, quality wise for me at least was the arm cup. It was the weak link to an otherwise good design.

I have to tell you; I personally never achieved outstanding depth with either detector. They did their job well in water but I found both to be a little heavy to use on land.

Thanks!
