11-19-2007 and 11-20-2007's coins

Due to Thanksgiving and the odd week I stopped by only two of my regular stops, one monday and one tuesday

On Monday (the 19th), I picked up a $1000 bag of quarters and a $50 bag of pennies from the same bank that I had gotten the wheaties and buffalos from in the past week. I am sure this was the quarter bag that was on the machine when the wheaties and buffies went in, but alas the quarters still produced squat.

5 Canadian (1986(2), 2000 National Legacy, 2002-P, 2005-P)

1 penny

When I cashed in on the 20th I found out I made $0.50 on this bag. Also when cashing in I ended up finding a few foreign coins hanging around in the machine.

Germany, 20 Euro Cent (2003-F)
Great Britain, 1 Pound (2000)
and 1 Canadian Quarter (1989)

Also on the 20th I picked up
1 - $200 bag of nickels
1 - $50 bag of pennies

I went through the nickels last night
1 - 1945-S War Nickel
43 other pre-1960 Jefferson (1939(3), 1940, 1940-D, 1940-S(2), 1941, 1942, 1946, 1946-D(3), 1948(2), 1948-D, 1951, 1952-D, 1953(2), 1954, 1956(3), 1956-D(3), 1957(2), 1957-D(3), 1958, 1959(2), 1959-D(8))

13 Canadian (1975, 1976, 1982, 1983(2), 1984, 1985, 1989(2), 1995, 2001-P, 2002-P, 2004-P)

Happy for this post, I just recently started coin roll hunting & have thought that maybe the better coins might be in the bags coming fresh off the machine. Maybe I should rethink that theory! Congrats on your finds!

If you can find the right bank you will do better with bags, but with other banks you will do worse. It just depends on the clientele that cash in their coins at that particular bank. With boxes, the coins could have been cashed in anywhere in the fed district (unless the bank rolls their own).

I do bags because the bank is happy to sell me their bags and I can pick up $100 to $300 a week in pennies (plus other denoms) without any dirty looks and without having to drive all over to get them (basically three branches that are on my daily route anyway). When I used to get boxes, I would hear the murmurs about fees occasionally and get asked a lot more questions. That and to get enough boxes to equal what I get in the bags took too much time and gas money if I only picked up 1 per bank. I really got dirty looks if I tried to pick up more than one box and had at least one bank (at least temporarily) shut me down with buying boxes without fees due to buying a multiple once. Other advantages with bags - no rolls to open so less time to search and less garbage and I am entertained by the oddball foreign coins and other objects that get sorted in that would be removed before sorted to rolls for a box.

The biggest pitfall with bags is you are usually off a few coins due to the counters being slightly inaccurate and foreign objects count as coins. Occasionally you will find a quarter in a penny bag, but usually its the other way around, a penny in a quarter bag. But that is the risk I take.

30 Canadian (1942, 1951, 1956, 1971, 1974(2), 1975(2), 1976, 1978(2), 1981, 1982, 1983(2), 1984(2), 1986, 1987, 1991, 1992(2), 1993(4), 1995, 1996, 1997, 2004)

Hey GMAN,

Did you find All your Silver Rosie's searching bags? That is an impressive number. I get maybe 1 every two boxes.

No. But I did find most of them that way. If I average out my dimes searched, I only find about 1.5 silver dimes per $250 when doing bags. I do worse with rolled coins, but most of the rolled coins were just edge searched at the bank through the clear plastic rolls so those numbers are quite skewed as the tellers could easily be edge searching as well.
