WOW! What a month. While most of these finds are recent. A few are a little late in the update. I finally got to make an update today. So.... No pretty ladies. But quite a few silvers. And some neat other finds.
Got to get out for a hunt with my friend Noah the other night. We brought along a friend who has never been detecting before. So, we decided to start in an area where we figured enough clad would be laying about he could get a feel for how the machine worked. After that. My intention was to set out to find my pretty lady. That being the Mercury Dime I just cant get enough of. However. Things took an unexpected route. And we ended up finding ourselves hunting in an area close to a Honey Bucket porta potty. It was COLD out! And it makes the need to pee a bit uncomfortable. To my surprise yet again. The area turned out to be a newly discovered hot spot. Within ten minutes I got a nice signal. So, I starting cuttin worms to get at it. At the bottom of the hole. I saw what appeared to be a shiny silver rim. It rang up right. So I took a deep breath and pulled it out. Shocked. I not only realized it wasnt a Silver Quarter. But it was a 100 Yen. So I had my doubts about its metal content. It had weight. The muck wiped away to reveal silver. My gut said SILVER. But. I was not sure until I got home to do some research on it. Knowing some basic Japanese. I could tell the year was yr 34. But, of whos Reign. Turns out. It was Emperor Hirohito. Or however you spell it - the Showa Reign. Making this coin a 1959 100 Yen of 60% silver. Five minutes after. Noah dug a dateless Buffalo Nickel. A first for all of us. I had yet to see anyone dig one up. So that was a real treat.
The pictures below are of the 100 Yen cleaned up using the baking soda method. Plus my last foreign silver coin find.
The Coin with the Bull. Is an Irish Shilling from 1928. Cleaned up. But using water only. The others I found were an Irish Penny from 1935. An Irish Half Cent from 1928. The silver is my Irish coin find #3 for the year. My grandparents are Irish. Not American Irish. But Irish Irish. These coins. Actually came from Ireland. My grandfather, who has long since passed. As I understand it. Would throw pennies into the yard for luck. And to keep us hyper kids busy. I barely remember him these days. But he was a great man. And I wish he would have lived a longer life. Anyway. He had a rather large garden in the back yard of the house. Which has since been patched over in grass for many years. I have always had an interest in foreign coins. In fact. I love em. I have a nice collection of them. Including a handful of Irish coins. Which, I tend to give out to people for good luck. However. The Silver coin is a first. And now has me very interested in these coins. And its an AWESOME 75% Silver coin! This is my favorite silver coin find so far! And as my grandmother tells me. There is quite possibly loads of old Irish and English coins in the yards of both properties. As the coinage was mixed when she was very young in Ireland. Getting to whatever other coins could be laying about in the soil. We will have to see. One property which I can easily detect. The other. Would require a long drive down to Lake View County to ask permission of the current owners. Either way. I can't wait to get back down for a real detecting trip with Holly. And see what we can find at the properties. The house itself is from 1915. The other one was from the 1800's. So, there is a good chance of other silvers that lay just waiting to be plucked out. Hopefully my pretty lady!!
Speaking of pretty ladies. I wanted to share this find. Its a 1883 V nickel. At first. I thought why on earth is it gold plated. Its in such good shape with a full liberty on the crown. Then I started to notice that. In an odd way. It reminded me of a Gold Piece. So, I googled it. And what I learned was. These 1883 V nickels. Were the first year minted and released into circulation. When they suddenly realized. They left off the word "cents". And as the story goes. Con artists quickly caught on to this. And plated them in gold. Passing them off as 5$ gold pieces. They are known as "Rackateer" Nickels. Is this an authentic Rackateer Nickel?? I dunno. Either way. Its pretty dang cool!

Here are the coins cleaned up. Again. I cleaned the 100 YEN to a nice shine. Rinsed the Irish Silver 1 Shilling. And Included at the bottom is a picture of the YEN coin uncleaned. As well as a lightly water cleaned Irish 1935 penny. Irish 1928 Half Penny with GREAT patina!! The ?Rackateer? Dirty Yen. And a 59 Silver Rosie which I killed by scratching it. Oh well. Its just a Rosie. And last but not least. Is Holly's big fat Silver Ring Find! Other finds so far this month have been a 50 Euro Cent Germany. 56 Rosie. Wheat cents. But NO PRETTY LADIES!! Where are you MERCURY DIMES!!??

try not to rub silver coins right out of the ground, it tends to leave scratches! If you rinse it first, you'll wash off all the grit. nice finds !

I always carry a little water bottle with me to wash coins. this one however. i just rubbed the muck off. But yeah you are right 100%. I should have it in my head by now there are a lot of OTHER coins other than the ones I recognize.

:icon_thumleft: Nice finds! I've never heard that Rackateer story before. It's very interesting.

Neither had I. Pretty Cool huh! I wonder how common it was that people did that. If you think about it. It was the very first V nickel produced. And since the word cents was left off. I bet it was easy for a trickster to plate the coin and pass it off as the NEW 5 dollar gold piece. Especially since the coin was new. Not everyone may have been aware of the new 5 cent type. Especially immigrants ext. makes you wonder. Boy would I have been mad if I had been duped by that.

Yeah, me too. $5.00 was a lot of money back then to most people.
