just found another link..... http://www.gforceauction.com/busine...25&search=&psearch=&msearch=&cat=&sort=1&pn=4

scroll down to lot 97. no image and it also includes the french 'Liberte' stamp. but it does give a bid valuation. Aloso doesn't say where tamp was issued/cancelled. but i believe that most were issued in NY State. You could order "First Day Covers" through the mail. (I have a collection of them from when i was young.) Some cost more than others, and the value differs greatly on FDC's.

So any idea what the coin itself is worth then?

Would it be this from the article you posted:

The Liberty Gold pieces come in the coveted PROOF Edition only. Each is a
magnificent 32mm Proof specimen in Solid 14 Karat Gold. The edition limit is 5,000
pieces (Limit 2 per order). The Proof Gold Liberties are accompanied by an
individually numbered Parchment Certificate and a deluxe presentation case.
Every one comes with our Certificate of Authenticity attesting to its Issue Date,
Limited Edition Status, precious metal content, and Registration Number. Every one
is protected by a 30 day MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE.

I cannot be sure of the valuation on yours, i can't quite make out the certificate in your image. but i would hazard a guess that it is real and that you should not handle the coin and have it looked at by a jeweler or other qualified individual. Cause it really looks like the real McCoy to me. Yours is Numbered #980. It makes me think it is the real thing. also the article in the first link states :
FIRST DAY OF ISSUE
The Liberty Gold and Silver Liberties are accompanied by a very special U.S.
Postal First Day of Issue. For the first time ever, Frederic Bartholdi, sculptor of the
Statue of Liberty has been commemorated on a U.S. Postal Service 22<t stamp. This
unique issue features a portrait of Bartholdi in the foreground, and the Statue of
Liberty silhouetted against a twilight skyline in the background. A First Day cover
featuring this beautiful Postal Commemorative will accompany each Liberty.

Ath the bottom of the article/Advertisement is an order form
Solid 14Kt. Gold PROOF Liberty(s) (Limit 2) at $165 each plus $3.00 for postage, handling
and insurance.
Cheers
