100 plus years old. .. Gold & Silver in glass tubes. What is this

This was passed down to my friend from great grandfather. He thinks it was used to find gold and silver - dowsing? He remembers being told one metal stock rod was used for gold and one for silver but doesn't know for sure. The glass has gold flakes in one side and silver in the other
