I got some decent goodies to post as soon as i get chance but I'm super busy. I thought id post this button i just found to get some opinions. I cant find a exact match but i thought someone on here may recognize it. I cant read the banner on it but i believe its a British 1st regiment of foot button. Thanks for looking! [emoji106]

I like your button!
1st regiment known as Royal Scots

your button doesn't have the thistle you'd expect to see on one of their buttons

Given our last day out I'd gladly take one of those! :tongue3:

Heres a couple pictures i found with the number 1 instead of thistle but they look kind of rough shape...

I'm assuming you likely got that off the Colchester site. Would not date that early.

I think that was the site. Just noticed them going through search images! [emoji106]

Nice button and in good shape. Due to the manufacture style, probably 1800-1820 period. These are very hard to find.

This is the best i could do for pictures on this phone.

Wish i could read it. In person i almost can but its such a small button i don't know what I'm looking for to make sense of it.

God I hate saying this because it looks good... but there's a very good chance there's a nicer button hiding below all that crud... maybe much nicer, and cleaning it would reveal it. The gamble would be you lose the green color -- if you like it... but the bonus is there could be gilt you're not seeing because of the corrosion...but even if not, cleaning it would almost certainly make the design and letters clear. The reason I hate saying it is I'd hate to suggest cleaning and the finder not be happy with the result... but with that being said, without question I clean that button if it was mine.

their motto is written in the garter
NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT

Nobody harms me with impunity

That's what a Royal Scots would say

Although yours says west ,,,,,,,, militia!!

the plot thickens

What would you do to safely clean it some? I use lemon juice sometimes on certain buttons but i didn't see any sign of gilt to bother attempting that.

How on earth did you spot even that on there. Maybe ill take another shot or two from different angles for you to see if you can get anything more to read off it. You gave me a starting point thats for sure. Thanks! [emoji106]

I've squinted at so many blurry pics...
I could go on lol

Yeah lemon juice is the way to go. I've seen buttons hide a fair bit of gilt or silver and look just like that... but even if there isn't, like I said you at least get clear detail in the end. About a decade ago I had a an 1812 King's 4th officer button that looked very similar.... corroded, but as much dark grime as corrosion. I cleaned it with lemon and was very surprised how good it looked in the end. I see way more potential than risk for yours, and that is why I would clean it if mine.

Also... the cleaning thought came to mind determining your button didn't seem to have the Royal Scots motto, so is clearly something different. I think War of 1812 1st West India Regiment would be a good possibility.
