If the find is real and If LIBERTY on headband is complete and legible and the knobs of the coronet are defined, the coin is in at least VF-20 condition and the retail Red Book value is $155 (3.3M issued; second largest mintage figure in the series (1849-1854).

It is a real find , it is just gold plated.

Doesnt look gold. Maybe counterfeit? Just guessing. Fakes were made. Mint mark below the wreath.

I think most of the value in that one is being a very cool detecting find. Counterfeits can have value, but it seems it's just those that have been studied and have varieties, mostly to determine what circulated in the Colonies. Once you get into the 1800s I think the interest drops off quite a bit because if there's little known about counterfeit gold there will be little interest in collecting them. I wouldn't sell that coin even if I was offered the gold price! Too neat to let go.

That is an extremely cool find, peanut. I'm gonna have to come up the hill and hunt with you it seems if I ever plan on finding cool stuff like that. :thumbsup:

I know it is counterfeit, I just wondered if it was worth anything.
