Hey folks,

I got to get out for a few hours this morning with a couple older fellas from our church. We went out into the hills to what used to be a small mining town a hundred years ago but you would never guess anything was there by the looks of it. We don't have any old pics or maps to go by as of yet, so we were kinda aimlessly wandering about and didn't find anything of significance. But I did find two interesting items that I'm not sure what they are.

The first is a silver-plated over pot metal thingy. It looks very decorative, but I can't figure out what it was used for. The second is a small piece of metal that is NOT a piece of iron, as it rings up around +31 on my Safari, which is just below penny range. It is also NOT lead, as it is the wrong color and too heavy. It is very, very smooth on the outside but with a small pit on one side. When I scratched it I noticed there is a very shiny, silvery metal underneath the hard blackish coating. I am just wondering if perhaps this might very well be a nickel type of meteorite. Tell me I'm wrong!

HH,

Ray

I took the little "nugget" to the jeweler today and he performed an acid test on it. There was a reaction on the golden metal, which means this is not gold and is more likely a molten piece of brass or something similar. I still don't know what the other piece is, but I like the beer stine or opera glass explanation (in fact, I had been thinking it might be the latter).

Very interesting finds. Keep searching. Looks like you might be close to the town. Or it's dump.

Ray, the first item looks like some modern chrome plated junk (sorry). And the second item looks like molten slag junk that can be found just about anywhere (sorry).

Thanks guys.

Tom, I did a bit of scratching on the dark surface area and it revealed a silvery metallic color underneath. I weighed the piece on my digital scale and it comes in at around 2.1 grams, which would make it a bit heavier than a gold nugget of equivalent dimensions. I've come across slag before but this appears to be different. But I could be wrong I suppose.

The decorative object in my opinion looks like a handle to either a beer stine or handle to a old sterling tea pot becuase of the curve at the one end and in the middle looks like a place for your hand . As for the second object looks like a piece or iron to me have tried putting a magnet on it and see if it is iron ?

Maybe the handle from a pair of lorgnettes?

A pair of eyeglasses or opera glasses with a short handle.

in the old days glass was very fragile, more so than today. old cabinets had a protective grille put in front of it to protect the glass from breakage. my grandmothers old china hutch had one. it looks more like silver wash than chrome plating to me.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Well I put the object to a magnet and it is non-magnetic.

Also, the metal underneath is not a silvery color like I had supposed yesterday. I guess the tiny scratch I made and looking at it underneath flourescent lights tricked my eyes into thinking it was silvery in color. I filed off a much larger patch and the metal is actually yellowish, close to the color of a gold nugget but more like brass. So this definitely rules out being a meteorite.

I know pure brass is non-magnetic also, but if this were brass I wouldn't think this small piece would be as heavy as it is (2.1 grams).
