The snow finally melted enough to get in the first hunt of 2010. The thaw exposed a lot of waste flakes, but I only found one point. The point is made of Flint Ridge and found in Southwestern PA. The point looks like a Fishtail type, re-sharpened Ashtabula, or Chesser. It seems too narrow and not long enough at 1 ¾” to be an Ashtabula. The only ones that match the distribution for the area are the Chesser or the Ashtabula. Has anyone from Ohio seen an Ashtabula this small?

I got to meet the competition at the site also. The good news is that he found a fluted point on the site two years ago. He’s been hunting the site for 30 years and I look forward to meeting with him to view his collection.

Nice find and insitu pic Rich. The fact that your competition has found a paleo point there has to be exciting. (surprised he gave that info up) Keep a good eye on the forecast and get there before he does after a good rain, ha ha. I'm not an Ohio guy but I have a Ky. Ashtabula that is smaller than that one, congrats on your find.

Nice material its made from
The Reeds Spring chert here can reflect three different colors also like that one,,,,,,

Nice one Jeff. Like thirty7 said its good to meet your competition. I tracked a guy for two years before I met him. He said he had also been wondering who I was. We are still friends to this day and its good to see what others are pulling out as well. Maybe this year you will find the fluted point.
Happy huntin

Thirty7, the crazy thing is that he is picking material out of distribution like I’ve picked up. He said he has many ovate blades that are 2”-3” in diameter made from this material that I hope to get pictures of in the near future. He did not mention having any projectile points made from this material. Compare pictures of material in this link of Oregon obsidian to the picture of my finds and tell me what you think. You won’t hurt my feelings with any comments. Are we off are rocker’s or is this legit?

Now that is quite a mystery Rich. I agree it is similar to the obsidian in the far west, and similar to some S. American materials I've seen. Obsidian was a valuable trade item and traveled / traded across much of North America. Obsidian occurs when felsic lava cools without crystal growth. It does occur in Va. naturally, I've found raw chunks as well as worked pieces and I presume it's source is an extinct volcano within 20 miles of me. It's always the dark transparent variety that is most common like a couple of the pieces in your picture.

I'd love to see the pictures of the blades he found if you get a chance to put them up. Mainly to see what culture they're associated with. Could be a clue to solve this. It's not out of the question that some of that material was traded into your area and worked by local tribes. But then again it's not out of the question that you have more competition on that spot then you know of and he's salting the site with exotic material to throw you off and keep you guessing.

I honestly can't say one way or the other that it's legit. There's just not enough evidence to make a call. Finding a point made of that material would be a big clue. Interesting dilemma though, and that material is high grade and pretty stuff to look at.

Nice find. looks similar, in form only, to a point i posted on Mollys thread,"unusual arrows". A few of the pieces in the second pic look familiar also, in form only. The piece in the top left looks like a piece i have that was I.D. as being a paleo end scraper.I.M.H.O.
H.H. Viking.

My opinion material is ridge, another guess maybe a reworked tip?
