I went out for a quickie today (only an hour). I managed to find another first today, " 1 1/2 Retailers Occupation token" . I thought it was going to be a silver dime, as my etrac was giving me a silver dime signal. The dime is there only for size comparison. It doesn't have any hallmarks anywhere, and I think its a little light to be silver, maybe aluminum. But why would it register as a silver dime? :icon_scratch:

I have to get a tokens and medals catalog, 'cause I've already found 5 tokens this year. Any ideas of what time frame this token can be from? Thanks for the help, and HH

Jon

Nice find lookin4seated first one I've seen, thanks, Charlie

You don't actually believe the VDU, do you? Tape over it & use your ears, they are the best discriminators.

PS. It's a cracking looking token, normally the Aluminium doesn't hold up that well.

It's an Illinois state sales tax token and dates c. 1935-36, although it officially remained in use until 1941.

There were also round tokens of the same denomination, 1-1/2 mills (a mill = 1/10¢) issued earlier in 1935.

"Occupation" refers to the fact that this was supposedly a tax upon merchants of various (virtually all) occupations; however, they were permitted to pass it on to consumers. This technicality neatly circumvented the state constitution, thus allowing citizens to be taxed on retail purchases.

Great find bud, I've never even seen one of those before!!!
