0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

I work at a grocery store. Inside of the grocery store is a bank, and I always see this lady (not a teller, but not the manager either) at her desk. So I'm real close to the bank and everything. I finally went in today and asked if they had any halves. They had a ten dollar roll at the drive thru (small bank) and everybody there was all like, "we'll be glad to get rid of those". They were saying like, come back and check, because we hate half dollars. None of the halves were silver, but the end looked almost silver. 1971, so i was kind of excited because it looked tarnished, but like i said, 1971.
I have horrible people skills. What do i ask them, because i feel like i could get the hook up with strange stuff that gets dropped off, but it's hard for me to communicate with people. Do i just ask them if they would save anything for me, or bring 'em donuts like somebody in another post? idk, your input is requested. : )

You could do all of those things. Personally, I just walk in and say i'm interested in buying any 50-cent pieces that they may have, rolls or loose.

Good luck

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

Its really up to you how you want to do it.

I would feel a little presumptous just giving donuts as soon as you ask them to keep stuff aside for you. That's more like something you would do AFTER they have already saved something for you as a thank you for doing it.

You could be like: "I work here (in the store) and walk by your bank everyday. I collect coins and was wondering, assuming none of you collect coins yourself, if you could set aside the weird looking or old coins for me. I'm always around here, so they won't be sitting in your vaults/draws for ages as you wait for me to show up, and I would really appreciate it."

You can mess around with the above depending on how many people you are talking to, etc. Its up to you if you want to elaborate on the fact you collect coins... say you are trying to find some hard dates for your sets, so as to draw attention away from the fact you are 99% looking for silver... or you could tell them you want silver coins if you want to risk it... and tell them you want coins 64 and older. If they are keen to silver, then you won't get stuff or as much, but if they really just want to help you, you would get more finds.

Your call.

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

Step #1: Admit to yourself that this may look wierd to some people.

Step #2: Be OK with #1 - so what if people think you're a nut. You're just having some good clean fun, and you're not hurting anyone at all; in fact, most places are happy to get rid of the half dollars. I find that once people think you're just a harmless wierdo, life gets pretty easy. In fact, when I call my banks to order coins, and if the person does not recongize my name, I say "...you know, that crazy guy that orders all of the half dollars.". The response is usually, "Oh! Yeah, sorry, I did not remember your name...the coins will be here on Monday!".

Step #3: Don't worry if someone comes down on you. In my short time on this planet, I have learned that some people have to make you feel bad in order to feel good about themselves. That sucks, but that's the way it is. Walk away and find another bank (sometimes, it helps to remember the fact that it must suck to be them).

Step #4: Have fun!

Happy hunting!

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

Everyone seems to be assuming only want the halves.

If that was the case than I still say you should ask them to set aside OTHER stuff as well. Just say weird/old coins or something like that. You never know WHAT could turn up that way. There are still some really cool/old coins being turned in that could end up your way if you tell some banks to keep them aside for you. =)

I recommend EVERONE do this, not just you!

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

i agree. bills to.

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

Very good point with the bills.

Tellers might know about silver... and I say MIGHT... but they don't often know about bills. They know they look different and are old and stuff... but they don't have a clue between a 1 dollar cert worth like $1.50 or one worth $11.50.

Def a smart move to ask them to keep an eye out for them.

"we'll be glad to get rid of those". They were saying like, come back and check, because we hate half dollars.
sounds to me like they already gave you an invitation to ask away...you work in the same building...people skills or not, eventually thier going to recognize you as a fellow employee..just check for halves a few days a week and before you know it they will be holding all of them for you...they don't like counting them over and over everyday and your the guy who's going to save them from having to do that.....a simple hello or good morning every day will seal the deal for you..before long you'll be on a first name basis and you will be free to ask about holding old and weird stuff for you.......your already ahead of us guys who cold call banks not knowing anyone
i used to be very apprehensive about asking but after the first few banks it gets easier and easier...i used to feel like i was bothering them until you realize that its thier job to service you and most are more than willing to help you out....i got to the point where i even ask them to check with the vault keeper if they tell me they don't have any...haven't had the guts yet to ask them to hold anything old or weird for me yet but as time goes on i'm sure i'll build a reputation with them where they might be inclined to hold stuff for me...right now i have so many banks to check i doubt they'll see me more than once every couple months...good luck and make sure to smile...people are more willing to do things for you when thier first impressionof you is one of a nice guy...HH...and let us know how you made out...i've only been doing this about 2 months and made some good scores already...

Good info so far. Here is what I have to say. Man up. Walk up, stand straight, look the person in the eye and ask them what you want.

Re: 0 FOR 20 & NEW BANK QUESTIONS

this may sound crazy but i used to bring boxes of "turtles" (chocolate covered caramel candies) to my dump banks. kinda expensive but it paid off in spades.

example: went in one day to dump two grand in halves. one of the tellers calls me over and said, "i think there's some of what you're looking for in here." she handed me fourteen bucks of loose halves. BLING!!! i could definitely see silver in the pile. i sorted through them as i was dumping. twelve 40's and two 90's later i was thanking my lucky stars she liked those "turtles"! LMAO! those tellers have also sold me at face value pre-65 dimes and quarters, going so far as to set them aside and wait until i came to break them out and sell them to me.

one of my favorite tellers had some clown come in and turned in a couple of clad ike's (wouldn't fit in the coin machine) and a strange looking dollar coin he'd never seen before. i told her i'd buy it sight unseen but she said no, that she was keeping that one. when she showed it to me my jaw dropped. there in her hand was a silver eagle! even though the coin said "one ounce silver" the guy apparently didn't pay enough attention and let it go for the stated face value of one dollar.

be nice to those tellers. they're our best resource for finding the BLING!

STDevil-- excellent post. Your thinking applies to everything in life ( as long as it's legal & moral).

For the author-- this is an excellent chance to work on your people skills. (Assuming you want to.)
The worst they or anyone can say is no.

And I just read this & about cried.

Rest in peace.
