John C. Salsich was born in 1838 in Western New York. In 1861, at 23 years of age, John traveled to Rochester, NY and enlisted in the Union army. He was assigned to Company K, 13th regiment of the New York State Volunteers.
Rising to the rank of sergeant, John served until May of 1863, and then...
Got out for a short hunt yesterday on the farm near my house. Dug a great sounding signal on the legend, and this popped out. I believe it is military, but not sure. The legend on the top says "First In Last Out." It was made by N.S. Meyer Inc. in New York City. Meyer Inc. was famous for making...
I've dug what I believe is a solid brass watch fob. The only info I've found is that the uniforms seem to match the Navy Sailors during the 1898 Spanish-American War. It cleaned up super well. Is it a military service item or just a commemorative piece? Any background about it will be...
Here are photos of the front and back of the buttons, text on front of first button (IMG_3251.jpeg)reads "Excelsior" along the bottom and has 13 stars along the top. The backside (IMG_3253.jpefg) reads " SCOVILLE MFG CO WATERBURY" along the top and "State of New York" along the bottom.
The front...
Found this military buckle on the bank of a waterway in central Idaho. Can you tell me anything about it? I found the following article referencing a similar buckle.
https://www.nps.gov/klgo/learn/historyculture/company-l-artifacts.htm
I have an opportunity to buy this piece, the seller is describing it simply as a Military Cartridge Box.
I'm hoping the experts here might be able to tell me where this piece originated and the age.
I have no details on the dimensions or what the interior looks like other then the pics you see...
Hi, I’m new to the Forum. I own a piece of property formally owned by Theodore Roosevelt.
A friend of mine gave me a metal detector and I’ve been finding so many exciting things. Saw blades, shotgun shells, military rounds, 45/90’s Krags. Any advice on what else to look for?
Thanks!
Found this in a friend’s grandma’s yard. They have veteran family, but couldn’t think of any disabled Vets. Any clues as to what this may have been a part of, so I could steer them in the right direction? No identifying marks, but maybe an old zipper? Keychain? Something else?
Greetings friends. I found this big ol chunk of brass (solid) while digging behind a real old plantation house in Athens Ga. It has ridges along the inside of the curve, and looks to have once been parabolic, but has seen better days. Solid brass makes me think military or surveying instrument...
I have no idea on this one. I have heard both. I am running in a electrolysis tank right now. It was found at a site with items from the mid 1700s up to 1950s until they let the woods grow where a home site existed. It is within view of water but no military action from what I understand. I have...
My uncle found two helmets a few years ago and ever since, my family has been debating on the origin and value of them. I'm under the impression that the helmets are from two separate places, found by a collector. Please help us!
I have been able to find this book and author but can't find any examples of his signature. Do you think this book is signed by the author or is it just Bill White? Your help is always appreciated.
Hi,
My husband and I found this item on a beach in Newport, RI a few years ago. Our best guess is some kind of a belt buckle, but we aren't sure. Would love to know more if anyone has any info. Thanks in advance!

This is a metal, not brass button with an eagle (head facing upwards), 13 stars and an anchor. One talon is on the shaft and the other is on the end bar. I am confused as to whether it is facing left or right. I am new to this identifying buttons. Also the back mark is a wreath (sort of) of...
I found this special relic a couple days ago on a field in a abandoned settlement. It is one of the best things I ever dug out of the ground. :icon_thumright:
Here's the video where I found the badge:
Dug these two matching copper artifacts last week. Roughly 4.5 inches long; 2.5 inches wide, they could have fit together, though they were found sightly apart. Other finds that day ranged from a 1906 "Farmer's Permit" (copper) to a battered Spanish real, circa 1780s.
The site's date doesn't...
I did some research already and have tried comparing it to other buttons online. Apparently the "Great Seal" button is pretty common.. I found this one in Arizona and the Stamp on the back is hard to read.. I may try to clean it up a little... But I forsure know its from City Button Works...
Found this near a very old site in MA...

I really a lot of people asking about buttons. So with that being said I have a very good friend and brother who is a button expert second to none. I bet that he can figure out any button especially military buttons. Military buttons are his specialty and he owns his own website...
I was detecting a really old house that's situated between a couple of opposing civil war camps. I found this old Navy button in the front yard, and a buckle cover in the field across the road.
Out here there used to be a military airfield long ago, WW2 or so I believe. I talked to some people and went to what used to be a machine gun practice range for aerial shooting I heard, there was a dirt mound down range where a lot of bullets got caught but I heard you can find them far away up...
Hello. While cleaning some of my grandfather's belongings I found what I thought was an artillery shell. Rather should I say it found me. It rolled and fell off a shelf about 12' on a concrete flooring scaring me half to death as I thought it was live. Upon no bang I went back to see it was...
Hi all, we dug this brass item yesterday. About 1.5" long. Can't quite find anything like it online. Any ideas? Note the hole in its side--not made by someone trying to hang it as a locket, but forged when the item was made (as you can see by the homing on the underneath). In the group photo...

Hi everyone. I mentioned yesterday I would post some photos of the buttons we've found so far on the 1683 property, so here goes. Several have subtle remainders of gold gilt. There is one button I'm very curious about--it has what looks like wheat on the sides, and some writing on it. I'm...
Found this at an 1875 home site in central Indiana. It is brass and 1.5 inches in diameter. It lacks any sort of back, but the central part shows where I believe something had been attached. So my questions are- 1) Is this military as I am assuming? 2) If military, what was it? Was it a...
Hello All,
Here is a second that I can't seem to identify. I need some help on the makers mark identification, age, composition, Value, info.
It is a Vintage/Antique Air Force (I believe) Cufflink, Collar Button perhaps.
From what I can see the makers mark appears to be a crest of sorts...
I hate to do it but I'm selling a lot of Civil War / Virginia Military Uniform Buttons: eBay item number: 182192600510 I'm starting to clean up my collections.
Hello everyone. These are from a short hunt on Sunday. The ring has been confirmed Mfg. between 1887 and 1912 by the hallmark,an oval backround with a tipped anchor and the letter K. RIPLEY-HOWLAND MFG Co. (on 10K Gold Rings, Manufacturing Jewelers, Boston, MA, and New York, NY, USA) - ca...
Today was a nice day and I decided to hit some back roads without a plan or destination. First I made a turn onto a dead end road where I spotted an old pump in a field and a narrow gate next to some old stuff hanging on a barbed wire fence. I made a hot lap around a tree and small grassy...
