hand forged relic

Got out for a short dig the other day at at an old family homestead site that goes back 200 years. Found some old buggy parts but this hand forged piece with the notches cut into it has me stumped. It is 5 1/2" long with 2" staples on either end. Would it have something to do with logging...

This was dug from the same cellar that produced the King George II 1747 coin. No idea what it is - it is in the shape of a spade point. I have seen very old shovels with metal attached to the bottom but not in this shape. It is 7" across and has 7 hand forged rivets. Any ideas would be...
