F75 Scores HTF Picket Bullet, CSA Camp Bullets, & Colonial Buttons
Dman had a little time last Friday morning to relic hunt so we traveled to an early war Tennessee Confederate Cavalry, Artillery, and Infantry Camp to try our luck at this hard hunted site for 2.5 hours. The remaining relics there were 8-11 inches deep. Since we were able to find decent relics on Friday, we went back on Saturday. Josh was invited to go with us but couldn't find anyone to work for him and had to cancel.
The bullet on the left top row is not found much anymore according to a local relic dealer. It's a .40 cal. Picket bullet (M & M #31) for a country rifle. These bullets were field molded in round and conical for a Kentucky Rifle that the soldier brought from home and show up in early war sites. The little ring to the right of the picket bullet is carved of lead and we don't know why the soldier would have carved it. The third bullet in the top row is a .44 cal. Colt Dragoon pistol bullet and there's a dropped .52 cal. Round ball on the top row. The second 3 ring bullet from the left on the second row is a "swaged" .54 cal. bullet. Swaged bullets have grooves in the cavity (shown in 2nd pic) and this is the first swaged one that I've found in a CS site. Swaged bullets (U.S. and C.S.A.) are hard to find here. The bullet book does not show a .54 cal. swaged bullet that I can find. The best thing about CSA sites is the possibility of finding rare and variant bullets.
Today, we went back to the Colonial site that we found last week North of the U.S.CW Infantry Camp and hunted 5 hours. Picture #3 is of my meager finds. Four of the buttons are flat and two are "domed". One of the flat buttons has a "Double Gilt" B/M. If you read my post from last week, you might remember me saying "I smell old Silver". Modern Miner thought Silver was my Horse (Pitiful). I was right about the silver. Dman was looking at the 3 "buttons" he had recovered when we took a break. As usual, his glasses were in the truck. One was not a button but was silver. Check his post later as he had the find of the day and a very nice old coin.
If you are still snowed in or just bored, I have added several CW relic pics on three pages with relevant histories to my profile. If you are new to Tnet, just click on "VOL1266-X" on the previous page with the lists of posts to view my profile page. Happy Hunting from Dman and I in Tennessee.
