For the "lovely" year of 2020. Just depends on the weather and how I feel.

Ya know....I walked/stumbled/crawled thru a cornfield today. It reminded me of something. That doing *ANY*thing...for FOUR hours is a long time of doing!!! :sleepy2:

Anyhoo....if this was my last hunt, I'm thinking it wasn't too bad a way to cap this year.

As always, I'll leave it up to you to decide if I wasted my time.

I've had worse days. :)
Enough finds to keep busy, varied enough to keep it interesting.

First up, this neat lil buckle. This thing was almost 10 inches deep!!

After my ears stopped ringing. I walked back and picked up my headphones and set about digging up this find that rang up as a *SOLID* and *HUGE* 91 in every direction!

Whatever it is, its completely non-magnetic. And it was almost *TWO FEET* underground!!!

But....I gotta say, Fishy has chosen the one find that I, for some reason, like the most.

Open to any thoughts about attempting to clean this one. Or...maybe just leave alone?

All in all, not too bad for a long stumble thru a cornfield. Eh?

Hope everyone is staying safe.

And, as always, thanks folks for all the wonderful peeks and feedback thru the year!

WIF,

The eagle item is the find of the lot....maybe just soak it in some warm water and see how it turns out. Looks way to fragile to do any intensive cleaning.

Bicycle bell cover comes to mind on the Eagle.
But edge not really agreeing. unless it was pounded on with a hammer or something...

I think its too heavy for a bell. Thanks for trying!

Fishy agrees with me that's a Civil War Union breastplate! Way to go! The ground is almost solidly frozen here.

I trust your judgement! It sure was deep enough! I started to rub off a bit of dirt in the field, until, I saw an eagle I recognized! Very happy! My first!

Your ground is frozen?!? Really!?? :icon_scratch:

It is frozen here too! The ground is like rock.

The thing with the eagle is a breastplate minus the lead backing, great find!!

That was my thought as well. There is a bit of something heavy on the back.

Relic-diggers and collectors commonly call these breastplates "lead-filled". But in actuality, the filler-metal in the back of civil war Original ones are solder, not lead. But Reproductions are indeed filled with lead

Interesting. I was thinking lead but it just didn't look like lead to me. Kinda 'splains it for me!

well solder has lead in it and has tin in it as well ,I think the tin is what causes them to fall apart. pure lead like bullets does not do that.

Great finds! If it is the last hunt of the year, you're going out on a high note! Thanks for sharing with us and congratulations.

Should I even try to clean? If so, how?

BTB the big silvery thing? Some sort of ancient radiator cap? Don't recognize the symbol. :dontknow:

Ground is semi frozen and come Wednesday and the snow, its all over! Lows about 19 this coming week.

I recently messed up an artifact trying to conserve it, so I'm the last to give advice. But I can say that an eagle plate to end the year is going out on a high note.
