Spanish Silver 8 reale *** UPDATE*** A 1700's COUNTERFEIT !!! @@

I'm hoping like heck this is what I think it is. I'm hoping this is a piece of Spanish silver. If so, it's by far my best coin ever! Can someone tell me what it is? Age? Is it real?
I can make out the following:
"SPAN ET IN?" on one side,
and "Carolus" on the other side.
If it were all in one piece it would be about the size of a half dollar maybe.
The edge has strange symbols on it too.
I was hunting around in the field next to the old 1830 house in the Morrisville battlefield area today.
I will post my other finds tomorrow. I am a bit excited right now, so I wanted to get this piece posted first. I almost didn't even bother digging this up. Just before this I had dug up a piece of wire, and filled in the hole. Not even a foot away I got another signal. I thought it would be another piece of wire, so I wasn't going to dig it. Now I am VERY glad I did.
Please tell me this is the real thing. :o
The Mighty Tesoro may have done me proud again. ;D

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

Holy crap, buddy, that is a Spanish wilver. It looks like a cut piece actually. If it was whole, it would be a 4-Reale, if it is half dollar size.

I am super happy for you! You deserve this, my friend. Keep showing Ridley how it is done!

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

Doug, it is mostly likely from the 1770s-1790s. That is my professional guess. :P :D

If I were a moderator, that coin would be on the Banner now! If I could choose anyone on this site to find something of that status, I would have picked you, my friend. You really do deserve it!

BDD...Kirk

P.S. I am drooling. :D

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

Yep it's a piece of one. A piece of eight, was cut into eight pieces to make change. As in two bits four bits six bits a dollar.

http://www.newworldtreasures.com/milledbust.htm

Anyway that coin is 1772-1821 cira.
Charles the III or IV.

Can't tell what denomination it came from. From the size of the bit you have, Most likely an 8 reale.

Awesome dig.

I don't think the Carolus bust went into the 1800s, my friend. This coin is from the 1700s.

Check the link I provided. I have a carlous the III 8 reale 1793.

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

My bad, since we don't know which Carlous it was. It could be a III or IV, Kirk. That coin could easily be a late 1700's coin. Not enough info for me to tell.

Still MM, awesome find. Spanish Reales were legal tender until 1857 in U.S.
