This was Mondays incredible hunt.
We returned to the spot where we got the Viking Penny & although I got a hammered we wanted to explore the spots we could see from the hill - 'The Trackway Site' & check how much of the Roman Site at the bottom was available. As luck would have it, the whole of the Roman Site had been re-drilled with Beans as the oilseed had failed. We also had a fair part of the Trackway Site available to hunt as well.:icon_thumright:

11 Roman Coins
Nice scarce Pyramidal Tudor Button
18th C Navy Button (only my 2nd of this largest kind)
Circa 1810 Pewter WEST KENT MILITIA Button (according to a leading expert there are only 9 known examples)8-)
Lead Roman Steel-yard Weight
Tiny bit of a Saxon Brooch
Bit of a Roman Bracelet
Tudor Book Clasp
Couple of Medieval Buckles
1613 James I Halfgroat
14th C Medieval Seal Matrix - OTWBTTC - Probably a merchants with an owl in centre & the letters CREDEAICH - Loosely translated (with help from the What Is It boys :thumbsup:) means - 'Believe Me' or 'We Believe'.
OTWBTTC - I got a circa 700AD Saxon Sceat :headbang:;
Leading Expert;
'This is Series F, variety a. There are 89 other coins of Series F recorded on the EMC, only 9 of them variety a. Series F has an effectively meaningless pseudo-inscription, which becomes progressively cruder from variety a to d.'

Amazing finds as always. Thanks for sharing and grats!

Way to go Cru, there are not enough positive adjectives in the dictionary to describe these artifacts. :notworthy:

Great digs, as always.

The matrix reminds me of The Owl of Athena - with the olive branch above.

Nice Saxon! :icon_thumright: That's still on my bucket list.

The seal matrix is just spectacular! And I cannot see a Saxon sceat posted without voting banner, so...

BANNER!

Bwahahahaha because you never see a Saxon sceat posted J!

I would concur with J here Cru. Your posts almost always have something banner worthy. I see no difference here and I’ll throw a vote in. If someone gave me a choice between finding an ancient coin like that and a gold coin it really wouldn’t be a competition.

You had a nice hunt. I like the two silvers and the seal matrix :thumbsup:

Exceptional finds! Congratulations!

What a hunt Crusader! The seal matrix is simply outstanding. You killed it...again! Congrats!!!

That’s a crazy hunt even by your standards.
Congrats on all the great finds

Thanks DTC. I’ve seen very few posted over the years, they are a very rare dig. Crusader can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think finding a 2000 yr old Celtic gold coin is probably more likely than finding a Saxon sceat.

14th century seal matrix and a silver Sceat. You crushed that site. More epic finds fall taken up with your coil. :headbang:

Its a detecting expression coined on Tnet I believe to explain a phenomena that seems fairly common but makes little sense. In that the best find can often come On The Way Back To The Car (OTWBTTC).

That used to be the case (mostly because they are so small compared to a Stater) but statistically they are now on about on par due to our sensitive machines. If we get 1 or 2 a year, it's been a good year.
Other difficulties are that its fairly easy to research & find an Iron Age (Celtic) Site but near impossible to research a Saxon Site. You either need to stumble on them or hope that a Roman Site continued occupation, which is super rare, as they tend to pick Sites away from the Roman areas. We have only found 2 Saxon Sites on top of Roman Sites, that's 2 out of about 46.
ie. I will be happy if its the only 1 we both see this year.
