So I went on a walk last Saturday (so technically this isn't a "today's find" but with a baby boy and all Xmas clean-ups I had no time to post this). It was the coldest day of the year so far, really strong North wind too.
I went by the old Italian/German WW2 beach bunker near my hometown. Found a handful of metal scrap pieces, a Nazi 3-hole tent button and then I saw something that looked like a copper or brass tube really covered in green patina, surrounded by rusty pieces peaking out the earth.
I had to dig a little with my pocketknife and pop!, out came a brass bayonet
handle
(I think, I haven't IDed it yet...)! I had to dig a little more to retrieve all 4 pieces of the heavily corroded and broken blade that were in place, too.

The whole thing is short of 40cm in length (about 13 inch or so) and I haven't decide yet how to try to clean and restore the blade (electrolysis would be an option but the conditions where this was buried have turned the steel pieces into brittle masses of rust...).
When I have made some progress I'll post a follow-up on this.

P.S. I logged in so excited with my find just to see a fellow TNeters civil war sword banner find...

This was found in Greece, on the coast of the Aegean sea (very salty...).

Wow thats freakin cool Love to see it when you clean it up no matter the condition what a great piece of History

if it's a brass handle bayonet, I think I would lean more towards it being a WW1 relic

Nice relic recovery! :occasion14:

jeweleryguy absolutely no WW1 action at that site but the Greek army had to use a lot of outdated equipment and weapons in WW2...
As I wrote, I haven't cleaned it up so I had no chance to ID it.

islamoradamark, one has to have a sharp eye...
You know there are lots of things out there that people just overlook because usually they "look" but don't "see" :-)
